Honda's Hydrogen Car Now Leasing in Japan!

AUTO CENTRAL – December 23, 2008: Following its successful launch in the US, Honda has begun leasing the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell car in Japan, delivering the first vehicle to the Ministry of the Environment.
While Honda plans to lease the FCX Clarity to government agencies and selected corporate entities, the roll out is part of the company’s broader commitment to lease the FCX Clarity to at least 200 customers in the United States and Japan over the next three years.

Honda Australia’s Senior Director, Mr. Lindsay Smalley said while there were no immediate plans to import the FCX Clarity to Australia, it is part of Honda’s long term vision. “The lack of infrastructure in this country is the biggest hurdle, however the FCX Clarity shows that Honda has introduced the future to the world today.
“Honda has been a world leader in producing low emission vehicles, dating back to the original Civic in 1972 with its ultra-clean CVCC engine. We’ve introduced hybrid and natural gas powered cars and in the future it is our vision to provide the world with the ultimate emissions-free car, the FCX Clarity,” said Mr. Smalley.

A dedicated fuel cell vehicle, the four-seater FCX Clarity runs on electricity produced by combining hydrogen with oxygen and emits only water vapour. Honda claims the vehicle is twice as energy efficient as a petrol-electric hybrid with three times better fuel efficiency than a traditional, petrol-powered car.
The FCX Clarity is powered by the Honda V Flow fuel cell stack that powers the car’s motor. A breakthrough in the design of the fuel cell stack has enabled engineers to lighten the body, expand the interior and increase efficiency.

Launched in the US in July 2008, the FCX Clarity was the first hydrogen car certified for regular commercial use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One of the first customers to lease the FCX Clarity was Hollywood star Jamie Lee-Curtis. Other well-known Honda FCX Clarity drivers from the world of entertainment are actress Laura Harris from the television show 24 and film producer Ron Yerxa.

Honda Presents Fuel Cell Electric FCX Clarity - VIDEO FEATURE

HONDA – DRIVING FOR THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS

LONDON - April 29, 2010: Over one hundred years have passed since the birth of the automobile. As we look for better ways to create and harness energy for transportation, Honda remains focused on creating sustainable mobility.
We are looking toward the next hundred years and exploring the challenge of new fuels and powerplants. We’re working to keep the dream of personal mobility alive for generations yet to come.
Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), which run on hydrogen and emit no CO2 or other harmful emissions, may be the key to securing a bright future for the automobile in society. Honda became the world’s first carmaker to put a fuel cell car on the road, delivering the Honda FCX to fleet users in the US and Japan in 2002.
Now we are ready to make another great leap forward, introducing a fuel cell electric vehicle that delivers superior environmental performance and is fun to drive: the FCX Clarity.

        Click PLAY to watch video

YouTube - Honda FCX Clarity: How it works

HOW HONDA’S FUEL CELL ELECTRIC VEHICLE WORKS.

A fuel cell vehicle has a hydrogen tank instead of a petrol tank. In the fuel cell stack, hydrogen is combined with atmospheric oxygen to generate electricity. No CO2 or other pollutants are emitted in this process. The only emission is water.

A compact and efficient lithium ion battery stores electricity generated during braking and deceleration in regenerative braking. When more power is needed, the battery works in harmony with the fuel cell stack as a supplementary power source.
Because the vehicle is propelled by an electric motor, it delivers smooth, powerful acceleration and quiet operation, without the noise and vibration associated with an internal combustion engine.
It is the ultimate in clean performance.

AIMING FOR A SUSTAINABLE-ENERGY SOCIETY FREE FROM DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS.

In an ideal hydrogen cycle, hydrogen produced from water via electrolysis using solar, wind, hydroelectric and other renewable energy sources would be used in fuel cells to generate electricity for use in cars and to meet other energy needs. The water produced as a by-product of this process would then return to the rivers and oceans before once again being converted into hydrogen via electrolysis. By realising such a renewable, water-to-water energy cycle, it may be possible one day to create truly sustainable energy supplies, freeing society from dependence on non-renewable and carbon-based energy sources.

            Honda FCX Clarity Longridge

Weighing in at 1,625kg, the Clarity in Longridge is substantially heavier than eco-rivals such as Toyota’s Prius and Honda’s own Insight, and that’s sometimes noticeable in the corners. But the FCX more than makes up for it with a useful range of 270 miles, and its maker says the energy-equivalent fuel consumption works out at around 81mpg.

The outlook for Honda has never been so clear. This is the firm’s hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity, which it is backing to lead the world into a fuel cell future.

As part of that effort, the FCX Clarity gets its European launch this week. Being previewed in Germany, the clock is ticking on a UK launch, too. We got behind the wheel to find out what a lucky few have to look forward to.

It’s soon obvious that there are some major hurdles to overcome – not least the fact that extracting hydrogen in a sustainable way remains a major challenge. Honda’s short-term solution is to provide drivers with their own ‘home energy station’ – a device that turns gas from the mains supply into hydrogen for your car.

There are no such question marks over the way the model drives, though. With a fuel cell-powered electric motor turning the front wheels, the Clarity feels remarkably similar to any other hatch on the move.

Progress is smooth, and apart from a gentle whine as you get up to speed, the cabin is eerily silent.

The Clarity is no slouch, either: as with any electric car there’s plenty of torque, which shoots it from 0-60mph in 10.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 101mph.

Weighing in at 1,625kg, the Clarity is substantially heavier than eco-rivals such as Toyota’s Prius and Honda’s own Insight, and that’s sometimes noticeable in the corners. But the FCX more than makes up for it with a useful range of 270 miles, and its maker says the energy-equivalent fuel consumption works out at around 81mpg.

While questions over eco-friendly hydrogen extraction remain, this car impresses. Capable of returning the equivalent of 81mpg, it is quiet, refined and practical. Cabin quality is first-rate, and the ride and handling are acceptable, too.

However, as a result of each example’s high production cost, it’s unlikely to be made widely available any time soon.

                FCX 2 = FCEV

Honda shows concept for next fuel-cell car

Honda today showed off a sleek concept for the design direction of its next hydrogen fuel-cell car, due in the U.S. and Japan in 2015.

Honda of America CEO Tetsuo Iwamura says the exotic-looking and aerodynamic FCEV Concept, making its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show "hints at Honda's future direction for fuel-cell vehicles. While this car is a concept, it points toward a very real future."

The FCEV, which seats five, is considerably more futuristic in look than Honda's original fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX introduced in 2002. Honda says FCEV also has a significantly updated powerplant that is 33% more compact than the fuel cell unit in its successor, the FCX Clarity launched in 2008, and puts out 66% more power at 100 kilowatts. And it says the new car will have a range of 300 miles on a fill-up of hydrogen.

A fuel cell car uses hydrogen to produce electricity. The only emission is water vapor.

The test fleet of original cars, a couple hundred, has been leased to individual retail customers and Honda has been collecting data on their performance and usage.

Honda continues to promote an infrastructure of hydrogen fueling stations that would support fuel-cell cars in wider use. And it has a deal announced last summer to work on fuel-cell technology in collaboration with General Motors, which was an early developer of the vehicles and has had its on test fleet of fuel cell-equipped Equinox SUVs.

How much does the FCEV say about the look of the coming real-world car? Before you say it's too exotic-looking, remember the Insight hybrid.
