Next-gen Honda Fit platform to underpin new crossover?

The next-generation Fit that is due to begin production in 2013 may also spawn a crossover from the Japanese maker. While details, including a model name, remain unknown, both the new Fit and the CUV are more than likely to be assembled in a new Honda plant in Mexico starting in 2014.

The new Fit should also break away in terms of design from the current one that’s sold globally in a new strategy. Honda also plans to sell at least one million vehicles based on the next-generation Fit’s platform. The CUV alone, which is likely to be targeted mainly for the U.S. and European markets, could hit as many as 400,000 units per year, Automotive News wrote.

The current Fit architecture is a basis for about 800,000 vehicles per year. This includes the City sedan sold in Japan.

Nissan’s Juke crossover, which is based on its Versa – a competitor to the Fit – has seen strong sales. Nissan put a much stronger engine under the hood of that car, hwoever, and Honda may need to do the same for a heavier, Fit-based CUV, as the 117-horspower 1.5-liter in the current car may just be too weak for North American standards.

Honda Jazz Hybrid test drive review

My husband had the first drive of the Honda Jazz Hybrid, an inauspicious journey whereby he dropped me off at the Tube station and went to Wickes to buy paint. As we travelled down our street, he muttered that the last two cars he drove were a big, red Rav4 on our honeymoon and a stunning silver-grey Bentley for his sister's wedding. But by the end of our week with the Jazz, his outlook was less "my, how the mighty have fallen" and more "so, can we afford one of these?".

So what caused the epiphany with this snub-nosed hatchback? It was a combination of factors, but mostly the incredible fuel economy that saw us have a very cheap weekend in Newcastle and the peppy performance that made it a surprisingly good motorway performer.

With the combination of a 1339cc petrol engine and an electric motor that is charged up every time you hit the brakes, it turned out to be a great car for our London-with-frequent-trips-to-Newcastle life. With that in mind, I eschewed the Tube and drove the Jazz to work for the next two days. Between being exempt from the dreaded London Charge, a free car park at my office and the stop-start function that cuts the engine at every red light, the fuel needle hardly moved after two days of 16-mile round trips.

The stop-start function is a little annoying at first but once you're used to it and you can see how much fuel you're saving, you wonder why you ever drove a car without it. Meanwhile, the six-speed CVT gearbox - a great innovation from Honda - kept the shifts smooth and seamless and one less thing to worry about in London traffic.

It all made city commuting a far preferable option to public transport - more comfortable and, I won't lie, I might have been driving through south London to the dulcet tones of Smooth FM. I would have gone for the retro-tastic Gold FM or 6Music, if I was feeling remotely cool, but the one minor drawback of the Jazz is no digital radio.

Absurdly, driving the Jazz to and from work was cheaper - and a few minutes quicker - than my usual bus-and-Tube commute.

When the car was delivered to our house, the gauge told us the range was around 380 miles. So we decided to put this to the test and drive the car to Newcastle for the weekend. We were due a trip to see the inlaws and surely this would work cheaper than two East Coast rail tickets? Given we usually spend at least £50 each on train tickets every time we head to the north-east, it turned out we were right. By the time we got to my husband's parents' house, the Jazz was telling us we still had a range of 70 miles. We'd already driven around 330 miles so the 380-mile range was actually pleasingly pessimistic.

After doing a few sums in the north-east, I figured out we'd achieved mileage of 50.3mpg, which included the low speeds of London city driving, the congestion of the functional but infuriating M25, a few solid hours of highway driving with the obligatory McDonalds at a services and then the relatively saner driving conditions of Newcastle.

We filled it up for a frugal £45 before we drove back to London at the end of the weekend and still had 68 miles worth of range left when we got home. Priced from £16,300, the variant I tested cost £16,750 OTR. It is not a dirt-cheap car but you are buying good quality as well as saving on fuel, paying £0 road tax and no Congestion Charge. It's also cheaper than many of the pure electrics which won't give you any change from 20-grand even with the government's £5,000 plug-in car grant - and come with the issue of range anxiety for as long as charging points are few and far between and charging time takes hours.

While the interior is more functional than funky, it was a very comfortable car for the road trip up north. There's also plenty of room - as well as transporting very impressed family members around the north-east, the generous cargo space meant it carried loads ranging from a 90-litre bag of bark for the garden to paint tins to laundry baskets and a load of small shrubs.

On the highway, the engine didn't strain and we were able to overtake with aplomb. At one point, on the way home from the north-east, I wanted to have a bit of a play so I knocked the gear shifter into Sports mode and started getting my Lewis Hamilton on with the paddle-shifters. But my hypermiling (the act of driving a vehicle using techniques that maximise fuel economy) husband figured it was far smarter to put the car back into drive to get maximum fuel economy. He was probably right - and let's face it, you're not going to see too many Honda Jazz hybrids burning rubber on track days - but it is nice to know that beneath the friendly face and eco-credentials, there is a beast lurking within.

New Version of the Honda Fit with a Crossover Twist Debuts at Sao Paulo Motor Show

Hyundai is not the only brand trying to tap into the crossover market in the sub-compact category in Brazil, as at the 2012 Sao Paulo International Motor Show, Honda also lifted the covers off its own proposal in the guise of the all-new Fit Twist.

The tougher-looking version of the Fit, which is sold in Europe and other parts of the world as the Jazz, is Honda's first vehicle to be developed exclusively for the Brazilian market.

On the outside, the Twist sports plastic cladding on the front and rear bumpers and over the wheel arches and side sills, a matte aluminum finish for the protective guards, mirror caps and the taller roof bars, bigger 16-inch alloy wheels, a re-styled front grille, dark headlamps and clear tail lamp fixtures.

The interior of the car is said to remain largely unchanged sans the new upholstery, the waterproof floor carpet in the boot area, and the chrome accents on the dashboard, air vents and handbrake.

In spite of its more rugged appearance, the Fit Twist doesn't even feature changes to the suspension setting as Honda kept the same ride height as the regular hatchback, with which it also shares its 1.5-liter flex-fuel engine producing 116hp when running on ethanol and 115hp on gasoline, connected to either a manual or an automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

The new Fit Twist will go on sale in Brazil at the end of October with a starting price of R$57,900 (US$28,600 or €21,900 at today's exchange rates), about R$10,000 (US$5,000 or €3,800) more than the base Fit hatchback.

10 reasons why you should buy a new Honda Fit

If you remember back in 2009 when President Barack Obama started the Cash for Clunkers program, a lot of people traded in there tired, gas guzzling vehicles and received $4500 rebates towards a new car that had 10 more MPG then the vehicle they traded in. One of the cars people traded in their old car for the most was the Honda Fit, and for good reason. Here are 10 reasons you should consider the Honda Fit, just like thousands of Americans have.

The Fit...is a Honda. That means you can rely on your Fit for years to come.
The Honda Fit is fun. It’s small size (161 inches long, 60 inches high and 67 inches wide) means that its cornering radius is nice and small. Maneuvering in and out of traffic is a breeze. The inline 4 cylinder with 117 HP and 106 lb/ft of torque with a redline of 6800 RPM means that you have plenty of grunt to merge and keep up with traffic.
The Honda Fit not that big. The Honda Fit is as almost as big as the Honda Civic Shuttle (wagovan) from the mid 80’s. Here’s a picture for comparison. A lot of compact cars grow in size over the years, but since the fit’s inception, it’s stayed somewhat the same.
The Honda Fit is affordable. Starts out at $15,325.
The Honda Fit’s seating configurations make it very versatile. Check out this picture to see all 4 seating positions.
The Honda Fit is very fuel efficient.Combined City/Highway MPG comes in around 30MPG. Plus a 10.6 gallon fuel tank means that you can theoretically make it to the Bay Area and back on one tank.
The Honda Fit can seat a 6’4” tall man quite comfortably. Don’t take my word for it. Check the testimonial here.
The Honda Fit has a large aftermarket support. You make your Honda Fit as different or as plain as all the rest. From headers, exhausts, air intakes, taillights and suspension pieces, there is no end to how you can improve on the Honda Fit and make it your own. For a taste of what’s avaialble, check out AndyAutoSports.com and browse around.
The Honda Fit is the type of vehicle for the whole family. You use it for your commute. Your wife will take it out for the grocery run and drop off the kids to practice and ultimately it will be around for when your son or daughter gets his license and he takes the Fit off to college.
The Honda Fit has a higher resale value and lower cost of ownership compared to the competition. Check out AOL’s comparison here.

Honda Fit Hatchback For Space Efficiency And Fuel Economy

Honda Fit is a super metro champion that gives exceptional space productivity and fuel economy in a reasonable and classy package.

CALGARY (I-Newswire) January 24, 2013 - Surprising features of Honda Fit hatchback

T and T Honda provide Honda Fit Hatchback which is a five door hatchback subcompact by Honda that was first introduced in June 2001. The Fit is on of the most fun small cars in its class to drive and the hatchback has won a multitude of awards that prove the vehicle’s dominance. 2008 Honda Fit Hatchback:

The 2008 Honda Fit offers a sizable interior, with a surprising amount of cargo space. The car feels very manoeuvrable in traffic. The Honda Fit sport looks good, but falls short of its potential.

              Specifications of Honda Fit Hatchback:

              • Power windows
              • Tilt steering wheel

              2009 Honda Fit Hatchback:

Its suspension is just too soft, it's shift linkage too mushy, its steering too numb. Joyfully, Honda generally have fixed a few of these problems using the 2009 Fit. The damper and spring tuning can be slightly sharper, the shift linkage a bit crisper. The whole car seems a bit more dialed-in when compared with before.

              2010 Honda Fit Hatchback:

              The 2010 Honda Fit includes a 117-hp, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive along with a 5-speed manual otherwise 5-speed automatic transmission. • 1.5L 4-cyl engine
              • Automatic transmission

              • Revised exterior styling

              2013 Honda Fit Hatchback

New Honda Fit/Jazz to feature collision-avoidance system

Starting this summer (Northern Hemisphere), the Japanese-market version of the Honda Fit/Jazz will be offered with the automaker’s new City-Brake Active System. It’s designed to minimize the chances of collisions at low speeds.

The system incorporates a laser radar unit, that’s located in the upper section of the windshield. When it detects an obstacle in the path of the car – and the car is traveling no faster than 30 km/h (18 mph) – the system starts by warning the driver via audio and visual cues. If the driver doesn’t immediately take action to avoid a collision, the brakes are automatically applied.

Additionally, City-Brake is designed to guard against accidental sudden accelerations, when the car is at a standstill or moving at less than 10 km/h (6 mph). Under those conditions, if the accelerator is pressed suddenly and an object is within four meters (13 feet) of the front of the vehicle, the audio and visual warnings are once again activated. If the driver doesn’t respond right away, the engine output will be decreased in order to stop the car.

Along with its upcoming introduction in Japan, the City-Brake Active System will be making its way into European Fits/Jazzes at a yet-to-be-established date. There's no word on other markets at this point.

Honda already features its Collision Mitigation Braking System in select models, while automakers including Volvo, Subaru and Mazda offer similar systems.

Honda to launch new generation Jazz next year

apanese auto major Honda today said it plans to roll out a new generation Jazz next year.

“We have plans to launch the new generation Jazz in the country some time next year,” Honda Cars India senior vice-president for marketing and sales Janeshwar Sen told reporters here at the launch of sedan Amaze.

Its first diesel offering, sedan Amaze, has been priced between Rs 5.10 lakh and Rs 7.64 lakh (ex-showroom Navi Mumbai).

Currently, the company sells five models in the domestic market: sedans Accord and City, utility vehicle CRV, and hatchbacks Brio and Jazz, apart from the latest Amaze which also comes in petrol variant.

The company, which produced 6,600 units of Jazz last year, has temporarily suspended its production since February, said Sen, adding it had also stopped production of Civic last year.

“At the moment there is no inventory either at plant or with our dealers,” he added.

Sen also said Honda is studying the market to develop a seven-seater multi-purpose vehicle from the Brio platform, adding, “whether we will introduce it or not is not yet decided”.

Mi se pare foarte ciudat sa aiba acel timp de franare pentru ca din cate stiu eu jazzul este una dintre putinele masini de clasa ”mica” cu discuri de frana si pe spate.

                      • Asta conteaza putin spre deloc. Importante sunt latimea anvelopelor, dimensiunea discurilor si masa autoturismului.

                          2013 Honda Fit Sport
                          Revisiting The Runabout Of Record

The current Honda Fit has been around the block a few times. The subcompact hatch has soldiered on without significant revision since its first update for US customers in 2009, and while Honda is on the verge of launching a third generation, we thought we'd take the time to see how the runabout stacks up against the new wave of small, efficient and plucky five-doors now on the American market. Those include old standbys like the Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris, as well as relative newcomers like the Chevrolet Sonic and Ford Fiesta.

Those machines may have all covered ground on the Fit, but Honda's wee machine holds a pleasant surprise for those buyers still willing to give the car the time of day. While the rest of the Japanese automaker's lineup has succumbed to dreaded model bloat, the Fit has remained true to the spirit of Honda that we remember from our vagabond youths. This may very well still be the closest genetic ancestor to the Civic models of old.

Outside, the Fit Sport continues to wear its "I'm the meanest June Bug" looks with pride. The oversized, wedge-shaped headlamps and aggressive lower fascia help lend the design plenty of attitude up front, and our tester's 16-inch alloy wheels keep this Honda from looking like it was the cheapest thing on the lot. Still, with a massive windscreen, tall greenhouse and short wheelbase, the Fit Sport can't help but look over-inflated, but that's a criticism we could levy at nearly every other product in this segment as well.

The Sport body kit plays nicely with the Fit's attractive lines, which keep the aesthetics from turning too slab sided. Step around to the rear, and the subcompact serves up a surprising helping of angles, both in its number plate inset and with the hatch lines themselves. Sport guise also contributes a small rear diffuser and spoiler, and while the bits aren't fooling anyone into believing they actually deliver any major aerodynamic benefit, we appreciate the styling choice all the same.

Once you're indoors, the bulbous exterior starts to make more sense. The Fit Sport still delivers an impressive amount of headroom for passengers both front and rear. With 40.4 inches up front, the Fit bests the Sonic, Fiesta and Yaris. Only the Versa hatchback offers more space for your cranium, and only a smidge more at that with 40.6 inches (Nissan isn't offering a 2013 model year Versa hatchback; it's being replaced later this year by the 2014 Versa Note). Rear passengers, though, will find more headroom in the Honda than any of its competitors.

Some six years later, the plucky little five-door continues to be a packaging wonder. Its flat load floor helps deliver a surprising amount of cargo area with the rear bench folded – up to 57.3 cubic feet. That number is more than twice what the Fiesta delivers, bests the Sonic by 10 cubes and the Versa hatchback by nearly seven. In fact, it's more space than class-above competitors like the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra GT and Mazda3 hatchbacks. And it's not just maximum cargo space where the Fit still wins, but also how those cubes are reconfigurable to accept objects of various shape and size. The trick second-row seat bottoms flip up to provide more vertical cubes of stowage space than a car this size should allow, and the front passenger seat tilts all the way back to help accommodate objects up to seven-foot, nine-inches in length. For people who want maximum utility in the smallest, least expensive package possible, the Fit is king.

The Fit also delivers a refreshingly unfussy dash bereft of the smattering of screens or jigsaw assembly Honda seems enamored with as of late. Instead, the driver gets treated to a logical instrument cluster with simple, easy-to-read gauges. Our Sport tester came with an attractive steering wheel with a stitched and perforated cover. Redundant controls and paddle shifters are part of the package as well, but don't expect those paddles to do anything beyond look good. Click the hardware and the delay between shifts is long enough to write, publish and distribute your own novella.

That's not to say we're in love with everything indoors. The infotainment system is showing its age in a big way, with pixelated graphics and slow response times between input and execution. We've seen gas station fuel pumps with more sophisticated interfaces. And while the seats are both supportive and comfy, the cloth material is nearly impossible to keep clean with thousands of little pockets to trap lint and other detritus of modern life. Still, those are small complaints for a car with this many years on its bones.

Under the hood, you'll find the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 117 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque, and our tester marries the mill with a five-speed automatic transmission. If the rest of the segment has made up ground on the Fit anywhere, it's here. Chevrolet will gladly sell you a Sonic with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 128 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque, and when paired with a six-speed automatic, the combination is good for 27 miles per gallon city and 37 mpg highway. Throw a manual six-speed in there and those figures climb to 29 and 40.

For comparison, the Fit can only manage 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway regardless of the transmission choice, and while the Sonic weighs in a full 200 pounds more than the Fit, the Chevrolet feels markedly more confident on the road. Likewise, the Fiesta delivers an Environmental Protection Agency-rated 29 mpg city and 33 mpg combined with a few extra ponies over the Fit.

You can a have a plethora of fun before you get anywhere near the limits of the vehicle or the law.

That said, the Fit is a shockingly enjoyable car to drive. Getting anywhere with any speed requires a certain familiarity with the engine's upper octaves, but like most Honda four-cylinders, the 1.5 loves to be wound out. Let the variable valve timing system do its magic and the engine does its best to come alive. But the real pleasure is in the vehicle's light weight and nimble feel, excellent suspension tuning and capable brakes. You can a have a plethora of fun in this machine before you get anywhere near the limits of the vehicle or the law. What's more, it doesn't take any work to hit those EPA figures, something we can't necessarily say for its competitors. We saw over 31 mpg even with a fair slice of hammering.

In this way, the Fit can't help but feel like a carbon copy of the Civics of old. This car is perhaps the last in the Honda stable that can follow its footsteps right back to the EF and EG generations, and it feels great for it. It also pulls at those heartstrings that are still tender for the Honda we've lost.

On the highway, the Fit is as quiet as any of its competitors and feels stable at speed. Though it may take some time to reach traveling speed, the driveline doesn't seem harried or out of breath at 70 miles per hour. As such, we could easily see covering four hours or so of roadway without wanting to feed our faces to a wood chipper. That's more than we can say for the Nissan Versa.

We have to tip our hat to the Fit for staying as sharp as it has for so long.

Make no mistake, the Chevrolet Sonic with the optional turbo engine is by far more entertaining to toss around, and it isn't as if opting for the more powerful engine will break the bank. Chevrolet asks just $700 to step up to the turbo in LT trim. Our Fit tester clicked up to just $20,580 with a $790 destination fee, complete with navigation, a six-speaker stereo and Bluetooth capability, which puts it neck and neck with its competitive set.

We have to tip our hat to the Fit for staying as sharp as it has for so long. While you can have more fun and get better EPA numbers out of some other players in this neck of the woods, the smallest of the Honda family still offers unbeatable interior space and an excellent drive. At the end of the day, this car is still far from the back of the pack and can hold its head high among much fresher metal.
