Pana aici indiciile duc catre ceva foarte...yummy! 8)

Next-Generation Acura RL to Reassert Flagship Position Within Acura Lineup!

October 6, 2009 at 11:56 am by Steve Siler

                        http://blog.caranddriver.com/next-ge...-acura-lineup/

While attending the first drive event for the Acura ZDX in Los Angeles, I had dinner with several Acura executives and talked quite a bit of shop that had little to do with the ZDX but lots to do with the rest of Acura’s lineup. The most interesting tidbit I gleaned from the meal regards the positioning of Acura’s two larger sedans—specifically the TL’s assumption of the position of the sportiest, most powerful and, to many (especially enthusiasts), most desirable car in Acura’s lineup, a spot that used to belong to the RL and its forebear, the legendary Legend.

That Acura’s “Jan Brady” is talented and sexy is certainly not a problem in and of itself, but what about “Marcia,” the RL? Yeah, remember that, the so-called “flagship” of the brand? The execs on hand recognized that the similarly sized TL, which costs $35,915 for the 280-hp, front-drive version and $44,195 in loaded, 305-hp, all-wheel-drive form, offers a set of product strengths that renders the $47,640 RL—available only with a 300-hp V-6 and all-wheel drive—difficult to market at the very best and all but irrelevant at worst: a prototypical case of elders being eaten by their young.

We are assured by Acura, however, that when the new model arrives, which we expect within two years (Acura is annoyingly tight-lipped about future products), there will be more distance created between the two models. But don’t expect the next RL to emulate the rear-wheel-drive, V-8 formula of most of its competitors, which include the Hyundai Genesis, the Lexus GS460, and the BMW 550i. Rumors that have suggested such a scenario have long been disproved, and Acura spokesmen reaffirmed that at our dinner, asserting that the relatively low take rate of V-8s in the segment and what it sees as shifting sensibilities on the part of luxury car customers will render a larger, more luxury-focused yet still V-6–powered RL right where it needs to be, particularly if gas prices rise over $4 per gallon again. We’re not sure if we’re looking into the same crystal ball as Acura is, but in any case, it will be nice to see a more distinct RL in the future.

Acura RL for 2010: Performance and luxury on the DL

                          2010 Acura RL

It's a new day in the auto industry when customers have become increasingly skeptical of the unknown. We've allowed fear to come off the sidelines. I'm somewhat reminded of the September 11, 2001 incident, as a result of which some still refuse to board an airplane. Ridiculous, yeah, I know, especially in a country that boasts "One nation, under God!" Under who?

Cheer up my fellow Americans and celebrate the good news of the Acura RL. It received 5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality, APEAL, and Vehicle Dependability Studies and ranked highest in its class in the Vehicle Dependability Study. And while hearing this may put your mind at ease, getting behind the wheel is the spark that's sure to send chills up and down your spine and pure joy to your soul!

Honestly, I can say to you without a doubt that I had more fun driving the Acura RL than any other car I've driven all 90+ days this year thus far! It handles with such grace and power that I jumped at the very thought of running an errand, attending an event, or just to be in its presence!

RL's understated luxury and minimal bling---to which I refer to as "luxe on the DL," allows the driver to pull up and roll through like a quiet storm. A powerful 300 horsepower V6 engine with engine with a five speed transmission is further enhanced by RL Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system. Derived from Acura's racing program, this sophisticated electronic system...

                          - replaces the usual cables and linkages between the accelerator pedal and engine throttle
                          - communicates with the transmission to enable quick, seamless gear changes
                          - factors in data, such as engine rpm, coolant temperature and road speed from various sensors before adjusting the throttle

Drive-by-Wire provides a smooth, powerful response with just the right throttle sensitivity in every driving situation and leaves you feeling great about your cars capability.

A tap on the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters when “D” is selected brings a quick gear change before returning to automatic operation when the RL has resumed a steady speed. For even faster acceleration, select “S,” for the engine to rev higher before shifting. Using a paddle shifter in “S” puts the transmission into full manual mode for full control of all shifting.

Unlike other all-wheel drive systems that basically react to wheel slippage, Acura's Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD ) is a proactive system that continuously determines the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear axles and between the rear wheels, based on a reading of a wide variety of vehicle conditions. Steering is enhanced by sending available rear power to the outside wheel and rotating it slightly faster than the front wheels, propelling it through the turn. Cornering that neither front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems can equal is the result and yet another reason why this car is such a blast to drive.

Okay, okay, okay, enough of the technical stuff. Let me rave about its beauty. RL's exterior highlights just kind of happen to you. It's definitely a case of less is more. Sure it has a handsome, somewhat bodacious grill, but it's done in a brushed metal so that the cop on the side of the road could very well miss you. And the chrome trim running across the rear, well, let's just say that we should all be so lucky to have some sort of accent back there!

A rich and beautiful stroke of dark wood is the focal point of the interior dash. In the center above it lies the view screen, with all controls and the shifter falling in a perfect line below. The result is a crisp and clean design. Again, less is more.
In terms of the luxury features, you name it and not only is it in the RL, but chances are, it's done at your convenience even before you ask. Even with that, I soooo enjoyed the navigation system with voice recognition allowing me to speak the command rather than stop the car (or divert my attention from the road) to enter. In other words, my wish was the RL's command. Now, how cool is that!

The USB interface made it convenient to play all the new music dear friends download for me. The perforated leather seats with heating and cool air ventilation kept my leather pants from sticking to the seat (okay, calm down--the temperatures were in the 30's a few weeks ago during my test drive! lol), the real time traffic and weather updates and the totally keyless system for entering, exiting and starting the car are even more reasons for you to check out the RL, with prices starting at $46,830. Shoot me a message when you do. I'd love to feel your joy!

2012 Acura RL Replacement Named RLX, Coming to New York

The confirmations of new product at the New York International Auto Show keep coming. This year the show is set to play host to a whole slew of important debuts. SRT Viper, Fisker Nina, Honda Crosstour Concept, Hyundai Sante Fe, the 2013 Chevrolet Impala and Traverse have all been confirmed. Earlier today Toyota released a teaser of what is likely to be the new Avalon.

Particularly in the full-size sedan arena the show will be an interesting one – Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Avalon (likely) and now the replacement for the Acura RL. Wards Auto has confirmed that the new sedan will be getting a name change, dubbed RLX. RLX? What is it with Acura these days sticking X on everything? We thought X was supposed to mean crossover, or at least all-wheel drive. Regardless, RLX it is. As far as full-size sedans go, the current RL is just about as uncompetitive as they come.

First introduced in 2004 as a 2005 model, the RL is overdue for a replacement. The mid-cycle enhancement it received for 2009 did it no favors, only making it look more dated (in our humble opinions). According to Acura’s vice-president Jeff Conrad, the redesign will be a total one. That is good news. Past reports have pointed to the new car being the first to debut Honda’s new hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive technology.

The system would eliminate the usual AWD driveline because the rear wheels would be powered by electric motors. This would enable the SH-AWD’s usual front-to-back side-to-side distribution of power. If true, that’s what we like to hear – innovative technology to differentiate Acura from the rest. Acura is near-luxury, and it has adopted that role wholeheartedly with the new ILX and redesigned RDX. It remains to be seen where the new sedan will be positioned. Without rear-wheel drive or V-8 power though, we don’t expect it to make much of an impact.
