  • Honda's 5 mantras to win in India

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...w/19300937.cms

Honda wants to be numero uno in India is hardly surprising. The two-wheeler giant is the leader in virtually every country it operates in, except China. In Brazil, it has a dominant 80% share, and controls half of the pie in Indonesia.

What is eye-popping is the hurry in which Honda wants to rule Indian roads. A little over two years after it exited a joint venture with the Hero group, HMSI has overtaken TVS and more recently edged ahead of former No. 2 Bajaj Auto to become the second-largest two-wheeler company in India.

And, in the next two to three years, HMSI, with a market share of just under 20%, has set its sights on beating the India leader Hero MotoCorp, which is currently sitting pretty with a 46% share. Here's a look at how Honda plans to be the new Hero:
Honda recently opened up a world-class technical centre in Manesar on Delhi's outskirts. By 2015-16, the centre will be able to develop and test new vehicles for the Indian market, help cut costs and shorten timelines for launches. So far, India was dependent on Honda's global R&D setup. The R&D unit will improve indigenisation (which is already at 97%), and help cut costs and improve quality.

HMSI recently introduced "eco technology" in its scooters that improved fuel efficiency from 54 km/l to 60 km/l. It was developed jointly by R&D teams in Japan and India. The technology will be used to develop four new models at the Manesar tech centre for India, one of which will be a 100-110 cc low-cost motorcycle on the lines of the Dream Yuga.

Honda's China March car sales down 6.6% on year

SHANGHAI--Japanese car maker Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday that it sold 61,108 vehicles in China through its two joint ventures in March, down 6.6% from a year earlier.

Honda's joint venture with China's Dongfeng Motor Group Co. sold 25,013 cars last month, down 16% from a year earlier, while sales at its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. rose 1.3% to 36,095 units.

In the first quarter of this year, Honda reported a 5.2% fall in its China sales to 140,380 cars.

Japanese brands suffered a sharp fall in sales amid a flare-up in a long-running dispute between Japan and China last year. The Japanese government in August announced a move to nationalize the uninhabited islands of Senkaku in the East China Sea to prevent commercial development, which prompted a public outcry in China. Beijing also claims sovereignty over the islands, known in Chinese as Diaoyu.

Honda targeted 25% growth in China sales to 750,000 vehicles for this year. The No. 3 Japanese auto maker posted a 3.1% decline in China sales last year.

Vile Gossip: Is Honda Coming Back to Us?

You would think Honda has been quietly seething about the trash talk the enthusiast press has been heaping on its bland lineup of perfect cars for the past decade. You know, like: We want a CR-Z like that 1990 CRX. Could the Accord be any more boring? Why can't Honda bake a little excitement into the Civic along with all that reliability and ridiculous resale value? Even Consumer Reports went off on Honda's brand-new 2012 Civic, calling the interior "dismal" and pulling its coveted "Recommended" rating. Whoa. We don't like boring cars at Automobile Magazine. But here's a shot of reality: Times have been tough. Honda saw a recession coming and pulled in the reins on frivolity when it designed the subdued 2012 Civic. "We thought the market would be more value driven," explains American Honda executive VP John Mendel. "It has been, but not at the cost of content."

Well, of course not! We're Americans, for heaven's sake. But was the 2012 Civic really a mistake? Honda had a jazzy redesign in the works soon after its introduction. Before it could act, Consumer Reports struck. Yet Honda sold 317,909 "dismal" Civics in 2012, making it the third-best-selling car in the U.S. The Accord (you know, the previous stodgy one) was the second-best seller at 331,872. The CR-V was the best-selling SUV/crossover at 281,652. We should know in our hearts that when times are tough, Americans buy Hondas. Says Mendel: "Here's the conundrum for any mass-market brand building three vehicles that each sell 300,000 examples a year. You have to be edgy yet not offensive. It's like a red suit; you say, 'Wow! But it's not for me.' The number-one ice cream sold in the world is still vanilla. It's horrible to say, I suppose, but you can't be so polarizing. It's a nightmare for designers and engineers. We want to be fun, yet we want to be safe, but we also want to be out there. "It tweaks me when I read that Honda has lost its way. No one sweats what the customer thinks more than we do. An old friend at Ford used to say that at the end of the day, you have to pass the pub test. You throw your keys on the bar. When you do and people see them, you don't have to explain yourself. Honda has always passed that test." Still, the 1990s were the end of hot Hondas as we knew them. That's when chief engineer Nobuhiko Kawamoto, the brilliant father of the world's first aluminum production car, the 1991 Acura NSX, became president and, sadly, transferred control from the wild-eyed engineers to the responsible manufacturing and marketing guys. Although he had been a racing mechanic himself, he pulled Honda out of Formula 1. By doing so, Kawamoto saved his company from the serious threat of a takeover by Mitsubishi Motors (imagine that). Honda then got down to the business of building sensible Civics and Accords with a vengeance. Mister Kawamoto retired in 1998, and we still miss talking with him. Fortunately, the racing heads in the company did not go away. In 1993 they became Honda Performance Development, keeping the pilot light burning as a subsidiary of American Honda. Now, on the eve of the Acura NSX's return to production, it is fitting that the HPD guys might be building the successor to the CRX of our dreams -- a hot CR-Z very much like the HPD concept we spied at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The concept has a 185-hp, supercharged four-cylinder engine, a sport suspension, a trick exhaust, big brakes, and eighteen-inch wheels. These HPD guys have pretty good credentials: since 2006, some ninety-eight IndyCar drivers have done business with HPD-prepared racing engines and have completed more than a million miles of practice, qualifying, and racing with only six in-race engine failures. You may want to begin a letter-writing campaign to Honda and put the hot CR-Z on your wish list. Meanwhile, there might be another Honda you can fall in love with. We have driven the new 2013 Honda Accord, and it is magnificent. Two weeks ago, most of the staff abandoned the office for a unique, bracketed, head-to-head test of eight mid-size cars, arguably the finest group of family sedans ever on the market at one time. Go to automobilemag.com or download our May iPad issue to read the report. I will tell you one thing: the 2013 Honda Accord blew everyone away. It's been a long time coming.

Honda Introduces City-Brake Active System to Help Prevent Low Speed Accidents

    LONDON, April 2, 2013 — /PRNewswire/ --

Honda has developed an accident avoidance support system called City-Brake Active System.

The City-Brake Active System operates when the vehicle is travelling at speeds of less than 18mph*. It uses a laser radar installed in the upper part of the windscreen to detect when a collision is imminent. If the City-Brake Active System identifies** a high risk of collision it will issue audio and visual warnings to the driver. If the driver does not take action to avoid the collision then the system will automatically apply the brakes.

The City-Brake Active System also protects drivers from accidental acceleration at speeds of less than 6mph* or from standstill. If the system determines that the driver has pressed too hard on the accelerator pedal, for example by mistakenly stepping on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal, when there is another vehicle within 4m* of the front of the vehicle, the driver will receive audio and visual warnings and the City-Brake Active System will control engine output to restrict the vehicle from moving forward.

Honda will first introduce the City-Brake Active System on the all-new Honda Fit which will go on sale in Japan later this year. The introduction of this new technology to Honda models in Europe has yet to be confirmed.

Honda's commitment to safety is embodied by the term 'Safety for Everyone' and Honda will continue to equip cars and motorcycles with the most advanced, effective safety features possible.

Honda sales rise in March, led by Accord

Honda's core models point to sales success

Honda reported a healthy 7.1% sales increase in March compared to the same month last year, led by a 36.4% boost in sales of its flagship sedan, the Accord.

The Honda division had an increase of 5.3% while Acura was up 26.3%. Sales of Honda's other big seller were impressive, but down 1.9% from a year ago.

"Our core models, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, continue to lead the industry where it counts," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "It's particularly rewarding to see Accord and Civic winning new customers against a headwind of competitor incentives and value-reducing fleet sales."

Other highlights included a third straight month of sales growth for Honda's Crosstour, a sort of combination car and crossover. It and the Pilot crossover SUV both had sales increases of 11%.

    Honda Dominates California Carpool Lane

When people think of Honda, they usually think reliability and fuel economy. There are car shoppers, though, to whom carpool access is a top priority. Honda says it can satisfy that requirement. The automaker offers four vehicles that are HOV-compliant: the all-new Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), natural gas-powered Civic CNG, Fit electric vehicle (EV), and FCX Clarity, which draws its power from combining hydrogen and oxygen into electricity.
The 2014 Honda Accord PHEV marks the automaker’s return to the mid-size hybrid sedan field after discontinuing the Accord Hybrid in 2007. Unlike its predecessors, which were mild hybrids, the Accord PHEV is a full hybrid and utilizes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a 120 kW electric motor. The motor doubles as a continuously variable transmission (i.e., e-CVT).
Under this setup, the Honda Accord PHEV gets an estimated 115 miles per gallon-equivalent (mpge) and can travel up to 15 miles on battery power alone before its hybrid engine kicks in. Fuel economy remains at the top-of-the-pack with an EPA-estimated 47 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 46 mpg combined. According to the automaker, that’s higher than the Ford Fusion Energi PHEV, which gets 100 mpge and gets 44 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 43 mpg combined. A full, non plug-in variant of the Accord is scheduled to go on sale later this year.
According to Dallas Honda Dealers, it’s not these particular numbers that help qualify the Accord Hybrid Plug-in for the green sticker. It’s the sedan’s exhaust emissions, or lack thereof. The Accord PHEV is the first — and currently only — gasoline-powered vehicle to meet California’s new super ultra-low emission vehicle (SULEV20) standard. Buyers of the Accord PHEV also get a $1,500 rebate from the state and a $3,626 federal tax credit.
If a plug-in hybrid qualifies for California’s HOV lanes, then a pure-electric vehicle like the Honda Fit is a shoo-in for a white sticker. Debuting in 2012 as a 2013 model, the Honda Fit EV is available in select areas in California and Oregon. Honda recently announced that its zero-emission subcompact hatch is now available in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
The 2013 Honda Fit EV gets an EPA-estimated 118 mpge and has a range around 82 miles between charges. The automaker offers three-year leases for qualified buyers, with California adding a $2,500 rebate as well.
The 2013 Honda Civic CNG is currently the only natural gas-powered car available to the public. While its range of 190 miles is not as high as a regular, gas-powered Civic (which gets up to 300 miles on a tank), fuel economy figures are similar with the Civic CNG getting an EPA-estimated 27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. More importantly, the natural gas burned emits few harmful emissions, which earn the Civic CNG its white sticker for HOV access.
The rare Honda FCX Clarity combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity and thus qualifies for the white sticker HOV access. The Clarity’s 60 mpge puts it on the low side among electrified vehicles (i.e., pure electrics like the Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric, etc). However, its 240-mile range is more than twice that of most EVs on the market.
Like the Fit EV, Honda only offers the FCX Clarity for lease. California offers a $2,500 for this green sedan.

    Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: March 2013

With the top seven automakers reporting numbers — which account for the vast majority of new-car sales — March sales have crept up around 3.2% over year-ago levels. Honda, GM and Ford saw the largest gains, but no major automaker saw a double-digit increase.
The top sellers are a reshuffle from February's list; all 10 are back. The Nissan Altima jumped three spots from February, and despite an 8% sales drop, it's the best-selling sedan by just 100 cars in March. Madness? Not really. Look back at March 2012 and the Altima even beat out the Chevrolet Silverado for a podium finish in monthly sales.
Lower year-over-year incentives played against Nissan's redesigned sedan as surging competitors — the Honda Accord and the Ford Fusion — saw larger gains. Ford says the Fusion had its best sales month in the nameplate's 7 1/2-year history, and this happened with fewer incentives than on last year’s outgoing model. The Escape hit its highest monthly total in its 12-plus-year history. Those two cars — and rising Explorer and F-Series sales — overcame falling Focus, Edge and Mustang sales to drive Ford to a 5.7% year-over-year increase.
Not to be left behind, GM saw double-digit sales gains in its Buick, Cadillac and GMC divisions; they drove GM to a 6.4% increase. "Trucks have improved in lockstep with the housing market," GM sales chief Kurt McNeil said in a company statement. Indeed, February housing starts (the latest month reported) were the second-best since mid-2008. GM noted that sales of all cars to small-business buyers — another segment tied to housing — increased 32%. And sales of the automaker's Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups rose 6% despite both trucks being long in the tooth ahead of their 2014 redesigns. If that's how well an old truck does, how about a new one? Chrysler had the answer. Sales of the revamped 2013 Ram pickup rose 25.5% versus March 2012, despite much less cash on the hood. Deals be damned; Ram buyers lined up to pay full price for a truck whose 1500 variant just won the coveted North American Truck of the Year award.
Combined incentives from automakers and dealers actually rose in March, with total incentives up to $5,467 per car — 14.4% off the total average MSRP, in fact, which represents the steepest percentage discounts in 11 months, according to CNW Marketing Research. Still, rising MSRPs edged transaction prices ever higher; the average car in March sold for $32,524.
Last month's fastest sellers weren't always the highest sellers. Nissan slashed pricing for its Leaf electric car, and March represented the first full month of sales for the 2013 model. Each 2013 Leaf stayed at Nissan dealers on average just seven days — well under the 48-day average for all 2013s and 2014s — and sales rocketed 286.2%. Lincoln's MKZ, on the other hand, sat on dealer lots for an average of just 14 days. But Lincoln moved just 2,360 of them in March, down 19.5% versus March 2012.
Here are March's top 10 sellers:

Honda China sales Down 6.6% in March

Honda Motor Co Ltd and its China joint ventures sold 61,108 cars in the country in March, down 6.6 percent from a year earlier, the Japanese automaker said on Tuesday. That compares with a 27.1 percent fall in February, although figures were skewed due to the timing of the week-long Lunar New Year holidays.

Sales in the first three months of the year came to 140,380, down 5.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Honda’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group sold 25,013 cars last month, down 16% from a year earlier, while sales at its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group rose 1.3% to 36,095 units.

China sales of Japanese carmakers fell around 50 percent following violent anti-Japan protests in September 2012 after Japan nationalised two East China Sea islands. China claims the islands as its own territory.

On the road: Honda CR-V i-Dtec Ex 4WD Manual

'The ride is very comfortable – Japanese engineering, not your arse, soaks up the potholes'

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...-i-dtec-review

I try to involve my girlfriend in my famous motoring journalism. It can be interesting to get a non-expert's opinion – a lady's point of view, you might say (if you were a sexist pig). But it's hard to get her to engage seriously. Often she fails even to notice that we're driving something different. If I can get a comment out of her, it's usually just a silly joke, because I live with a punning moron. "Absence makes the fart grow Honda," she says about this one. What does that even mean? Nothing, it's just a stupid spoonerism.

This is what I have to live with, dear leader (that's you by the way, not Kim Jong-il, who's sadly dead, so won't be reading, or leading… Oh God, I'm turning into her. Racist, too). Anyway, in the interest of tolerance, I'll try to take her ridiculous utterance as a starting point for this review.

Absence. Ab-sense, ABS sense… It has ABS, of course – nearly all cars do. This one is a top-end "EX" trim-level model, so it has a lot more besides: leather seats, panoramic glass sunroof, integrated satnav, etc. All of which bump up the price. Thirty-one thousand squids is a lot to pay for a CR-V, given that you can get something much posher, German even, for that money. Lower-end models (prices start at £21,395) make more sense.

Heart. Nah, forget about it. The CR-V is a practical, versatile vehicle, not one that anyone's going to fall in love with – for its performance (unspectacular), looks (ditto) or character (dreary).

Fart. CO2 emissions (and fuel consumption) are down on the previous one – they're good for one of these soft-roaders. Still not amazing, though. There's a greener model in the pipeline, a two-wheel-drive 1.6 diesel that will guff out just 119g/km. As no one's actually going to take one of these off-road, that might be the one to go for.

Grow. Cars get bigger. This is way bigger than the first-generation CR-V, which came out in 1995. But in fact it's a few millimetres shorter and lower than the previous one, which is refreshing. And no interior space is lost. There's loads, for five in comfort. The ride is very comfortable too – Japanese engineering, not your arse, soaks up the potholes. Less chance of bringing on a fart that way, then (I know people who fart on every speed bump). And if you do, the boot is cavernous, so hopefully it will go back there and dissipate.

      Fonder. No. See Heart, above.

Honda. It won't go wrong. But this kind of cheap, reliable motoring is no longer the preserve of the Japanese. The Koreans (Kia and Hyundai) have at least caught up, and in interesting design, too. South Koreans obviously, not North, dear reader… Aaagggh.

Honda's Growth Helps Tow Ohio Out Of Recession

Honda is moving its North American headquarters from California to Ohio. That's just the latest bit of good news for the Buckeye State and Honda, whose fortunes have been closely tied for decades now.
Honda has been an economic heavyweight here since it was lured to central Ohio in the 1970s. The company's footprint is big, and it continues to increase.
Honda's sprawling Marysville Auto Plant opened outside Columbus in 1982. Since then, it has grown to nearly 4 million square feet and now sits on a campus of 8,000 acres.
More than 4,000 employees build 1,900 vehicles here every day, including Honda Accords and several Acura models, and the company is adding 100,000 square feet to the plant to build a new hybrid.
That means more work for nearby engine and transmission plants, and for the more than 150 Ohio companies that sell parts to Honda.
      A Broad Impact
Company spokesman Ron Lietzke says with Honda's Ohio operations in a continuing growth spurt, it makes sense to move the headquarters here.
"It will increase the speed of making decisions, it'll increase the speed of introducing new models, and it will improve our communications activities throughout the organization in North America," he says.
With more cars being built here and expanding global markets, Honda of America expects to soon become a net exporter of vehicles for the first time, sending cars to Asia and the Middle East. And as Honda goes, so goes much of the rest of central Ohio's economic development.
      A Boon To Housing

Al Kinzer, who was Honda of America's first employee, drives the company's one millionth U.S.-produced car off the assembly line at Honda's assembly plant in Marysville, Ohio, April 8, 1988.

      Greg Sailor/AP
Brothers Adam and Justin McMahon have helped run a family roofing business since high school. When business took a hit during the recession, they decided to try to take advantage of the housing crisis.
They started buying up rundown houses in foreclosure, then renovated them and flipped them for a profit. It's been so lucrative that Adam McMahon is considering doing it full time.
"It's a lot easier. It'd be nice — I think there's more money in it," he says, "so we started buying houses through the winter, and that gives us our profit for that year."
And there's plenty of profit to be had. The latest report shows statewide home sales up 10 percent over last year — up 20 percent in the Columbus region. The auto industry is also picking up in Cleveland, Toledo and other parts of the state.

      Attracting More Employers

The state's unemployment rate is about 1 percentage point below the national average, and incomes in Ohio are rising faster than in all but two other states. Higher land and commodity prices have also helped agriculture, Ohio's largest industry.
Michael Brandl, an economist at The Ohio State University, says Ohio is becoming increasingly attractive for both workers and employers.
"Ohio has a great advantage over some other places where people are thinking of locating, in terms of sound infrastructure, relatively low cost of living, a decent educated workforce," he says. "You can see why lots of firms are thinking about and relocating here, as well as starting here."
Brandl says those startups should help diversify the economy here even more and ensure that Ohio continues to outperform other states clawing their way back from the recession.

Redesigned Honda Accord better than ever

It's a redesign year for the Honda Accord, the first one since 2008.
For starters, the new 2013 Accord is slightly smaller and lighter than previous models. That goes against Honda's normal redesign playbook for its high-volume selling sedan/coupe. In previous revamping years, the Accord would typically be bigger, longer and heavier. More bulk was obviously not part of the latest redesign scheme.
What else is different regarding the ninth generation Accord? Honda also incorporated some interior refinements (better audio, improved dashboard) and convenience. It made some performance upgrades as well, delivering a new four-cylinder engine and updating the V6 offerings.
      2013 Honda Accord

      • Performance: 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, 185 horsepower; 3.5-liter, V6, 278 horsepower
      • Mileage estimate range: 21-36 mpg
      • Price: $21,680 to $33,430
      • Warranty: 3years/36,000 miles; drivetrain 5 years/60,000 miles; corrosion 5 year/unlimited

Making considerable changes is nothing new in this crowded field of midsize sedans. Many of the segment's popular models have also initiated change this year or in 2012.
No longer is this just a two-horse race between the always reliable front-wheel drive Honda Accord and its Toyota counterpart, the Camry. These two practical, family-oriented sedans and coupes haven't slipped in any area. In fact, they continue to improve.
While retaining its defining qualities - value, reliability, performance, passenger accommodations, resale capability - there's no doubt the competition is inching up on the Accord. Despite the overall performance, some rivals can match it, and also provide similar ride quality. That's not to besmirch the Accord or Camry; it just illustrates that the two Japanese automotive superpowers are no longer as dominant.
The list of legitimate rivals includes the Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata, and Mazda 6.
Expect increased performance this year from all six Accord trims. Three of the models feature a beefed-up 2.4-liter, four-cylinder that generates 185 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The V6 Accords have a 3.5-liter engine that produces 278 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. The V6, which includes Honda's Variable Cylinder Management cylinder, is quick, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
As mentioned above, there are some nice interior changes that result in an upgraded cockpit. Practically all the materials are high quality and the center stack has been redesigned with more bells and whistles. The Accord continues to provide impressive interior room and comfort, and the sedan trunk has grown 1 cubic foot larger (15.8 cubic feet).
The ride remains practically unchanged. The Accord delivers a refined ride that gives any driver an added feeling of confidence behind the wheel. The feel is almost sporty and there's little apprehension when taking a corner a little faster than the speed limit. The braking is solid and the Accord has practically no noise issues.
The folks at Honda did a great job of making the already admirable Accord even better in 2013. The combination of appearance, performance, convenience and reliability will definitely keep the Accord remain at or near the top of this highly competitive segment.

March Sales Surge: Honda Accord Deliveries Jump by More Than 36 Percent

American Honda—including both Honda and Acura divisions—was the fastest-growing mainstream automaker in the country in March, enjoying a 7.1 percent advance on the strength of 136,038 deliveries.
Leading the way: the brand-new 2013 Honda Accord, which has been attracting new customers at an amazing clip since the redesigned model went on sale. Last month, for example, the Accord tallied 36,504 sales and a 36.4 percent increase as compared to March 2012. Further, with first-quarter numbers now in the books, the Accord has rung up 88,427 sales in 2013 and is ahead of last year’s pace by 44.6 percent.
Honda’s award-winning midsize contender wasn’t the only member of the team to finish spring training on a high note. The Honda Civic and Honda CR-V both were among the industry’s top 15 sellers for March, with a respective 27,665 and 26,896 sales, and the Honda Odyssey continued above the five-figure mark with 10,923 sales.
Also reaping impressive growth gains for the company last month:
      • Offering new standard technologies for 2013, like a rearview camera and Bluetooth capability, the Honda Pilot delivered 11,207 units in March, an increase of 11 percent.
      • Honda Crosstour, leveraging its recent refresh, posted its third consecutive month of growth and increased sales by 11.7 percent—delivering 1,522 units.
      • The Honda Ridgeline benefited from a 40.9 percent sales leap to achieve 1,712 sales.

“Our core models, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, continue to lead the industry where it counts, in retail sales,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of Sales at American Honda. “It’s particularly rewarding to see Accord and Civic winning new customers against a headwind of competitor incentives and value-reducing fleet sales.”

      • The Odyssey is equally at home on the highway and in urban settings.
      • “Front and second row seating comfort is quite good.”
      • With the third row folded flat, there’s “ample space for a wide range of items.”

These are just the latest in a long line of recent honors for the 2013 Odyssey, which also has been named:

Honda tests fuel cell to power home

KITAKYUSHU – Honda Motor Co. on Tuesday began testing a system to supply electricity to single-family homes from fuel-cell vehicles.

Honda will continue testing the system, designed to examine how much power such a system could provide, by supplying electricity to a single-family house once a week between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Kitakyushu. The experiment is expected to last two years until the end of fiscal 2014.

The maximum power output of the fuel-cell vehicle used in the experiment is 9 kw, covering six days of power used in an average household, according to Honda and the city of Kitakyushu.

A fuel-cell car is powered by electricity produced by combining hydrogen and oxygen and has a greater power capacity than an electric vehicle. It takes only three or four minutes to fill a fuel-cell vehicle with liquid hydrogen, less time than it takes to charge an electric vehicle.

Fuel-cell vehicles are attracting attention as a power source in the event of an emergency.

Honda and Acura tease new concepts ahead of their 2013 Shanghai Auto Show debut

Honda and Acura have recently teased two new concept cars that they’ll be showcasing at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show in China, which is set to take place at the end of this month.

However, Honda and Acura kept their cards super close with these teasers as nothing is known about these future models. Though, judging by the teasers, Acura’s concept looks like to either be a midsized or fullsized crossover, which could indicate that Acura is trying to make a larger crossover SUV than the MDX.

Honda on the other hand, appears to be teasing a minivan, which we could only guess is a China-spec Odyssey.

But, either way, the only way we’ll know is through the course of time as Shanghai’s Motor Show nears its beginning for the 2013 year.

Order book for the new Honda CR-V tops 3,000 units; 2.4 model now open for booking ahead of June launch

There were never any doubts that the latest Honda CR-V would be a commercial success here in Malaysia; the only hanging question was how big of a hit it would prove to be. A colossal one, as it turns out.
Honda Malaysia has just announced that there have been close to 3,000 bookings for the fourth-generation CR-V within a month of its local launch. That’s the highest ever figure for a new Honda model and considering how popular the brand is among Malaysians in recent years, that’s no mean feat.
The 3,000 orders also surpassed the all-time highest monthly booking figure for the three previous generations of the SUV. To put it into perspective, Honda Malaysia has now achieved 43% of the 7,000 unit yearly sales target set for the new CR-V, all within its first month on the market.

As such, there’s a lengthy waiting list for all but the earliest adopters, and Honda Malaysia is already in the process of reviewing its production plan to reduce the waiting period for customers.
It has also been announced that the 2.4 litre variant of the Honda CR-V is now open for booking ahead of its market introduction in June this year. The higher performance model is expected to be priced around the RM190,000 range, and will account for 10% of all new CR-Vs sold.
To find out what the fuss is all about, you can read our extensive report of the Honda CR-V launch here. Also, third-gen CR-V-owner Anthony has sampled both the new 2.0 and 2.4 litre variants at a press drive in Thailand. Click here for his comprehensive test drive report on the new model.

Honda Wants to Break Pikes Peak Record

Honda has record-breaking aspirations for this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb scheduled for June 29-30th.

The automaker has already broken a record for the highest number of vehicle classes to enter from a single manufacturer. A total of 10 Honda vehicles will participate at “The Race to the Clouds” this year, including cars, motorcycles and ATVs. Honda looks toward obtaining an overall victory at the race, regardless its limited sponsorship for the event.

Pikes Peak’s Hill Climb is recognized as the world’s ultimate hill climbing race, with a 12.42-mile (20 km) course that starts at 2.8 km (9,390 feet) and ends at a of 4.3 km (14,110 feet) max altitude. The course is very difficult due to its 156 turns and the 30 percent engine power loss due to the thin air at high-altitudes.

Honda: Take Advantage Of The Giant Japanese QE

With the Japanese government set to deploy a new QE of historical proportions (see The Year of the Central Banks: The Godzilla Atack and the Refugee Camps), it is a good idea to check the numbers on Japanese auto manufacturers. Current US auto sales are at 15.32 million, up 6.20% from a year ago. Last time, I presented my statistical analysis for Toyota (TM) and results were surprisingly good on valuation, even though the stock has advanced substantially in the last 5 months. I'm presenting now the numbers for Honda Motor Corp (HMC).

          2013 Accord coupe, source: honda.com

          Statistical Evaluation

Numbers should always have priority over any subjective analysis. The following image shows a simple quantitative analysis presented in a layer or checklist-type format that I call Plan 21. My research methodology tends to focus more on a future growth analysis rather than solely relying on pure deep-value models. The aim is to have a system that is both straightforward and comprehensive by taking into consideration key elements from the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement without loosing attention on the business expansion for coming years.

Only companies with positive EPS (12 trailing months) and positive growth for the current year qualify for the analysis. A glossary for the abbreviations is included at the end of Part II. As a reminder, we always need to be aware that estimates are multi-variable dependent forecasts that carry the inherent risk of future prediction.

          2013 Honda Civic EX-L Sedan
          Baby steps.

For one regrettably long decade, the rolling stock of the midwestern United States consisted of Pontiac Grand Ams and Dodge Shadows. Seriously, the place was filthy with them. This seems to prove what we have long believed: A car’s sales success often has a weak correlation to its greatness.

And so, we arrive at the 2012 Honda Civic, which was an undeniable sales success for the company. Honda says it sold 331,872 of the then all-new Civics in 2012, making it the bestselling car in its class that year. We presume that most buyers are perfectly satisfied with their purchases.

And yet, for the long-term health of the model’s and the company’s reputation, Honda has performed a thorough do-over of the Civic for 2013, modifying its look, its interior ambience, its front structure, and its suspension and steering systems.

With new front and rear styling, Honda grafts a shiny smile to the formerly sad, sluglike shape of the four-door Civic. Honda says it’s a more “emotional” and “youthful” design. This, of course, means nothing. But we like the new look just fine.

Honda redid the interior as well, giving it a more conventional look and feel, with a black upper dash, a mildly reworked center stack, some shiny trim, and leather-like graining in place of the strange bacteria-in-a-petri-dish look. The ambience is more upscale. That the car also carries more sound-deadening insulation and thicker glass to block noise helps a great deal. Honda did not reduce the number of small information displays that, at four, seems about 50 percent too many.

With new narrow-offset crash tests looming, Honda beefed up the Civic’s front structure. We did not test the efficacy of this modification. The revised structure adds almost 50 pounds of steel to the front end. That, plus more standard equipment, such as a rearview camera, had our 2013 *tester weighing in at 2876 pounds, 125 more than the 2012 Civic sedan we tested. The weight gain hasn’t affected the car’s acceleration times, which remain about a second behind the class-leading Ford Focus. Honda hasn’t made any changes to the powertrain, a weak-kneed 140-hp 1.8-liter four and five-speed auto.

It wasn’t the 2012 Civic’s pokiness that bothered us most, though. It was the soft and numb suspension and steering responses that inspired us to describe it as “alarmingly Lincoln-like.”

We’re delighted to report Honda has starched the suspension with thicker anti-roll bars (up 0.9 inch in front and 0.2 inch at the rear), stiffer springs (plus 15 percent front, 18 percent rear), and retuned dampers. The effect is almost transformative. The ride is now controlled without being harsh, imparting a distinctly less-cheap feeling. The company also quickened the steering ratio by 8 percent (from 16.1:1 to 14.9:1), which makes the Civic feel like the small, light car it is. Unfortunately, Honda has added zero percent additional feedback to the operation of the steering.

But the 2013 Civic is 28 percent closer to the car Honda should have built in the first place. Baby steps, you know. View Photo Gallery

Honda's new CR-V sales exceed expectations

          http://www.btimes.com.my/articles/12CRV/Article/

KUALA LUMPUR: The all-new Honda CR-V has received nearly 3,000 bookings in the first month of its launch on March 5, the highest by Honda Malaysia for a new model.

This represents 43 per cent of its annual sales target of 7,000 units. The new CR-V contributed 34 per cent of the company's overall sales last month.

Honda Malaysia managing director and chief executive officer Yoichiro Ueno said sales for the fourth generation CR-V has exceeded expectations.

"We will be reviewing our production plan and conducting a feasibility study to reduce the waiting period for the all-new CR-V," he said.

The positive response reinforces Honda Malaysia's target of retaining the leading position in the sports utility vehicle market segment.

Honda Malaysia attributed the high demand for the new CR-V to its advance features, functionality and class-leading spaciousness.

The overwhelming acceptance is reflective of the popularity enjoyed by the CR-V in other countries, it added.

          Comparison Test: 2013 Honda CR-V vs. 2013 Toyota RAV4

Review by Jonathan Yarkony, photos by Jeff Wilson and Jonathan Yarkony

After several months in an Autos.ca Long-Term Test, a Test Drive last year and surviving three Comparison Tests (and winning one) we are plenty familiar with Honda’s CR-V. The Toyota RAV4, on the other hand, is new to the market just this spring and both dramatically changes from the previous generation while in some ways returns to its roots.

Both are now exclusively five-seat, four-cylinder, soft-roader crossover SUVs with optional AWD, just as they were when these nameplates were launched in the mid-nineties (okay, the RAV4 had those ridiculous two-door and convertible models, but lets just conveniently ignore those for the sake of symmetry, here). Both are also built in Canada, though that was not as significant a factor in their comparison as the fact that they have consistently battled in the sales charts, fighting for compact SUV shoppers that didn’t opt for the dominant Ford Escape. While the Escape dominates the Canadian compact SUV sales charts, the CR-V topped it in the States with over 280,000 units sold, but this year is trailing both the Escape and RAV4 in Canadian and American sales.

While we aim to have a more extensive comparison with new compact crossover offerings later this summer, we felt that these two have such a similar history and approach that we wanted to see how these traditional rivals (perhaps even ‘icons’ of the crossover breed) stacked up head to head. And despite a slight mismatch in trims, we feel that the essential qualities of each vehicle were present and accounted for, enough so that a fair and relevant evaluation can be conducted even with the varied option selections offering differences in character that serve to highlight the strengths of each vehicle and brand.

          Features/Value:

We were able to book an almost identically priced RAV4 during one of the last weeks of the CR-V’s residence, although they were not nearly identically equipped. Our CR-V is essentially a base model LX with one big feature, AWD, added on, taking the price to $28,140, plus a $1,640 destination fee and $100 excise tax for a grand total of $29,880.

The RAV4 we were offered came to $29,905, the difference less than the price of a family meal at Swiss Chalet. However, it arrives at that price over the base $23,790 LE FWD (score a point for Toyota for this low base price) as the $27,000 FWD XLE, $1,170 for the nav system (plus XM satellite radio and voice command), plus $1,635 destination and $100 A/C tax landing it at $29,905. For the equivalent of the CR-V’s base price ($25,990), the RAV4 can be had with AWD.

2013 Honda CR-V LX AWD & 2013 Toyota RAV4 XLE FWD. Click image to enlarge

Feature for feature, Honda at least has a slight edge in base-model equipment with an LCD display screen with radio data, voice command, driver armrest (vs a shared centre console armrest in the RAV4), a compass, heated driver and passenger seats, and a back-up camera. The RAV4 has wheel covers, which the CR-V does not.

However, in this specific comparison, the RAV4 XLE FWD bumps the speaker count to six (from four), adds a sunroof, alloy wheels, dual-zone auto climate, 6.1-inch touchscreen display, heated front seats and premium cloth, cargo cover, variable intermittent wipers and a back-up camera, as well as the aforementioned nav system upgrade that also includes XM satellite radio and voice command. Without going all the way up to XLE trim, you can get the 6 speakers, 6.1-inch touchscreen display, tinted windows, cargo cover and back-up camera as a $1,000 upgrade package on the FWD or AWD LE trim.

Without question, the RAV4 provides more features at a better price.

          Design

Interior design is perhaps more subjective than feature counting, but despite Toyota’s efforts to liven up their interiors, they may have missed the mark. While I do like the essence of the layered dash and leather-stitched panel, it actually hides a row of buttons under its lip that made it hard for me to locate and reach the seat-heater switch. Everything in the CR-V is easy to reach and clearly marked, although its basic features meant there was little to control relative to the RAV4’s navigation-equipped and touchscreen-controlled infotainment system.

And then there is the quality of materials.

The RAV4 interior is by no means Lexus quality, but it is clearly better than the CR-V, which is very much an economy car in its simplicity and basic materials.

The CR-V is awash in hard plastics, while the RAV4 is updated with quality materials, although they may have added one material too many in the tacky carbon-fibre-patterned shifter gate. Oh, and having a molded plastic imitation leather stitching on the steering heel hub right next to the genuinely stitched leather dash is just wrong.

My co-tester on evaluation day, Jeff Wilson, was turned off: “CR-V’s interior design is much cleaner and simpler – I greatly prefer it. By comparison, I counted at least ten different materials, colours or textures inside the wildly over-styled RAV4.”

          Sometimes, simple is best.

But exterior design is not one of those times. How does the saying go? Fortune favours the bold. The RAV4’s creased and sculpted surfaces are eye-catching and it won Jeff over: “To my eye, the RAV4 is a much more attractive rig than the bulbous, awkward-looking CRV.” While I appreciate some details on the RAV4, particularly the crisp line that wraps around the front fenders, the nose seems too pointy, and the flat ‘shelf’ of the tailgate below the rear window is ungainly (though perhaps aerodynamically functional) and I see nothing to recommend it over the CR-V’s anonymous yet less fussy design. Despite my objections, I’ll concede to the majority as I have heard many others positive comments about the RAV4’s interior and exterior design.

However, one other oddity or oversight of the RAV4’s design is the placement of the tailgate handle right below the rear window – it’s just too high, which makes it harder for anyone, but especially shorter people, to lift the tailgate. Perhaps this is a product of Toyota’s recent switch to the vertical tailgate instead of the side-hinged door, but the CR-V’s handle is conveniently located at the very bottom of the tailgate just above the bumper.

A quick note about safety: The 2013 RAV4 has yet to be rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but we expect that it will match the CR-V’s Top Safety Pick and Five Star Overall ratings.

So, the RAV4’s design seems to make a better first impression, as does interior quality, but the CR-V is quietly a very smart package without any real marks against except dullness.

          Utility

These two cars are incredibly closely matched in size and interior dimensions, so it could be a wash, but it’s not. While the RAV4 is slightly larger in every exterior dimension (but within 50 mm/a couple inches in length, width and wheelbase), the CR-V makes the most of its barely smaller footprint with better interior space in most measurements except front legroom and headroom.

The one dramatic advantage for the CR-V is in rear hip room, 1,349 mm to the RAV4’s 1,242. That 107 mm (over 4 inches) makes a difference. After testing day, I set up both my car seats in each car, and asked my wife to test the middle position. While the CR-V is tight, it is tolerable for short distances. The RAV4 did not even have sufficient space for my wife to squeeze in between the two car seats, and she is smaller than most average North American teenagers. Without car seats, the RAV4 is also a bit tighter, but still functional.

This time around, I finally found a sucker, er, I mean volunteer to perform the car-seat installation test, and this is what Jeff – also the father of a toddler – found: “Slightly easier to locate the LATCH anchor points in the CR-V than in the RAV. Plus there’s no need to remove head rests for installation in the CR-V and the backrest angle lines up for a perfectly flush mount with the car seat. Also, the rear doors of the CR-V open much wider than RAV4’s. This is especially useful for loading and unloading bulky items – like toddlers or their car seats.”

Front seat comfort for parents was good in both, but I personally preferred the softer texture of the CR-V seat fabric, and Jeff points out that the well-positioned driver’s seat armrest in the CR-V makes long distance driving more relaxed and comfortable.

The cargo areas are within 100 L of each other with seats up or down, with the RAV4 slightly more accommodating, not only in measurement but also in my “Canadian dad cargo test”. In the pictures with my hockey bag and our son’s stroller, note how the stroller had room to lie flat in the RAV4, where we have to turn it on its side in the CR-V. The RAV4 also has a cargo cover for those looking to hide their goods from prying eyes, and the floor is flush with the plastic trim above the bumper, where the CR-V has a lip, making it easier to slide heavy objects into the RAV4. However, the CR-V counters with the useful ability to drop the rear seats from the back cargo area (RAV4 requires going to each rear door opening and accessing a lever at the top of the seatback to do so).

Still the RAV4’s slightly larger cargo area isn’t enough to outweigh the more accommodating and flexible CR-V interior.

          Ride

With these two vehicles in our possession, we took the opportunity to get away from the urban and suburban confines of our usual test loop and headed north, aiming for cottage country. Between gas stops, a quick wash (yes, believe it or not we washed the cars, as fruitless as that was since it started snowing and kicking up slush the minute we left the car wash), and photography, we only made about halfway to our intended destination before hitting our cutoff time. Still, we meandered through the suburban outskirts of the GTA, then traversed some horribly maintained country highways, and even found a steep gravel sideroad with a fair dusting of snow.

Out here, we had a chance to pick apart the ride of these two vehicles, and this provided one of the biggest surprises. The RAV4 was rough. The suspension was simply too firm, leading to a jittery ride, and brakes that seemed a touch grabby. Yes, the steering was sharp and the responsiveness was good, but it did not come off as sporty, just rough and twitchy. It’s like Toyota has forgotten all about the gazillions of customers who have flocked to it for that pleasant, novocaine ride and aimed to please a few overeager enthusiasts. Granted, it is better overall than the previous generation, which seemed completely lost whenever making a turn, but this seems to have taken the sportiness need too far, even going so far as to offering a ‘Sport’ button to remap transmission and throttle – I doubt that will really appease all those V6 loyalists Toyota claimed with the last RAV4.

The CR-V was a complete softy and absorbed washboard roads with minimal fuss in the cabin aside from a generous serving of noise. Everywhere else, the CR-V demonstrated supreme comfort without feeling sloppy in the corners. To go back to our first Crossover Comparison Test, in which the CR-V proved victorious, “The nearly perfect ride balance between comfort and sport is unexpected in this class of vehicle and the steering wheel sends a surprising amount of feedback to the driver.”

And when arriving at your destination, both have a reasonable turning circle (though the RAV4’s is slightly better), and both were equipped with back-up cameras in this test, with reasonable visibility out of the side windows and the same restrictive D-pillars to work around. No real advantage here.

Almost everything about driving the CR-V feels just right, while the RAV4 seems to have confused firmness with sport. And, of course, with Honda having spent its upgrade budget on AWD, it also offered superior traction in slippery conditions (hey, if the RAV4 gets points for all its features, the CR-V deserves a nod here). We don’t doubt that the RAV4 would have equaled the CR-V for traction capability if so equipped, and even in FWD configuration, still pulled away smartly after traction control took over and meted out appropriate engine and wheel braking, further convincing me I have no need for AWD. Others may feel differently. Suit yourself.

          Powertrain

Now that both the RAV4 and CR-V are on an even footing offering exclusively inline-fours, we knew this powertrain category was going to be one of the most closely contested. Could the CR-V’s 2.4L 185 hp edge out the RAV4’s 2.5L I4 making 176 hp? The RAV4 answers back with 172 lb-ft of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission with manual and sport modes to the CR-V’s 163 lb-ft and five-speed automatic.

In the brute strength department, there is little question that the RAV4 feels stronger, and making its peak torque and horsepower at lower engine speeds means it has more guts just dawdling around, and its 1,560 kg in XLE FWD trim is virtually equal to the AWD CR-V (1,554 kg). However, that is about where the advantage ends.

Both buzz irritatingly when you wind them up, both lack meaningful power, and anyone looking for such power will need to step up to a competitor with a turbo-four or V6, or be prepared to be patient when accelerating. I would classify this level of power saddled with this weight as enough, just barely. Once up to speed, of course, they are entirely adequate for moving the cars along briskly, even at GTA 400-series highway speeds.

However, we were well out of the city on 60-, 70-, and 80-limit roads, and when driving varied terrain at speeds between 60 and 110 km/h, the RAV4 was consistently confused about gear would best serve. Gradual inclines at 70 resulted in double downshifts, and yet firm prods of the pedal for passing were slow to provoke a gear change. As much as having six speeds seems a good idea on paper, the Honda five-speed was the better, smoother transmission, unless you are the rare individual that actually uses the manual mode (shifter controlled) when cruising around.

Overall, the CR-V just felt subtly better and more natural driving down the road, the engine a little more subdued and refined, the engine, transmission, suspension and all-wheel traction working together in mechanical harmony, or perhaps simply resonating with both of us.

          Fuel Efficiency

But before we conclude this comparison, we must report on fuel consumption. According to the Natural Resources Canada testing method, the Toyota RAV4 FWD is capable of 8.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.4 on the highway and 7.7 combined; factor in AWD, and it climbs to 9.1/6.8/8.0. The US EPA method suggests 9.8/7.6/9.0 for FWD and 10.7/8.1/9.4 for AWD.
Comparison Test: 2013 Honda CR V vs. 2013 Toyota RAV4 car comparisons

2013 Honda CR-V LX AWD & 2013 Toyota RAV4 XLE FWD. Click image to enlarge

The Honda CR-V, on the Canadian cycle, in LX AWD trim as equipped, is estimated at 9.2/6.6/8.0, while a more efficient FWD drivetrain would earn 9.0/6.4/7.8. US estimates peg it at 10.2/7.6/9.0 for FWD and 10.7/7.8/9.4.

These are all close enough that they will amount to a hill of beans compared to how you drive your car. Driving these two cars on the same route, at essentially the same pace and swapping drivers periodically gave us readings of 9.1 L/100 km for the FWD, six-speed automatic RAV4, while the five-speed AWD CR-V narrowly beat it, coming in at 8.9 L/100 km.

After keeping both cars for the remainder of the week and following similar use, the gap remained with the RAV4 finishing at 9.5 and the CR-V at 9.3 (as it did over the course of an entire long-term test). On paper, this is a win for the Honda, though in reality, you wouldn’t be saving enough to buy a latte at every fill-up, and both use regular gas, so no penalties there.

But don’t trust us; a quick check of Fuelly shows that 2013 CR-V owners are managing an average of 8.9, while RAV4 users are averaging 9.4 (though this is a decidedly smaller sample group).

          Conclusion

We already knew the CR-V was good going into this comparison. The previous generation RAV4 offered much value, flexibility and power, but the driving experience was questionable and between quality of materials and design, left us cold.

There is no question that this new RAV4 is better in every way, except power, with standout but polarizing looks, a fascinating interior design, and even better value and efficiency than the previous generation.

Despite interior quality that needs addressing, and somewhat plain looks, the CR-V has a thoughtful and appealing interior that shows a mastery of packaging and functionality, fulfills all the necessities that people look for in this segment, offers a near-perfect compromise of on-road manners, sufficient power, and incredible ease of use. It is by no means the features or value leader, but if you’re turned off by the higher price of entry, just remember the back-up camera and heated seats – usually cost options or part of a higher priced package.

I’ll let Jeff back me up so you don’t think it’s just because I’ve spent the past three months getting used to the CR-V:

“I would happily forgo the toys and gizmos the XLE trim provides for the driving experience of the CR-V with its AWD capabilities. Under microscopic scrutiny, the sum of all the little details simply make the CR-V more practical and enjoyable to live with day to day and is my preference of the two.”

While I myself am not so quick to dismiss the value and features of the RAV4 – I would opt for the alloy wheels and upgraded stereo of the CR-V EX over the AWD LX – the ride comfort and more refined driving experience, not to mention the more practical rear seat would also have me choose the Honda CR-V for my family. I guess that makes it unanimous: Honda CR-V is back on top again.

Honda Civic Si Delivers Big Fun in a Compact Package

The 2013 Honda Civic is continuing its long run as one of the best-selling compact cars in America, and not just because it’s also one of the most fuel-efficient small vehicles. Further helping matters is that the brand also provides a little bonus for enthusiasts—in the form of the Honda Civic Si.

            2013 Honda Civic Si

Available in both coupe and sedan configurations, the Civic Si is an agile performer with both increased power and improved driving dynamics over the standard Civic. Beneath the hood, for example, the Si models holster a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque, providing advantages of 43 and 33 percent as compared to the traditional Civic. Further, the sportier choices boast a helical limited-slip differential and retuned suspensions for athletic handling and nimble reflexes. Naturally, the only transmission is a close-ratio six-speed manual.

That kind of premium performance brings some upscale cabin amenities, too, with standard and available goodies like:

A 360-watt seven-speaker premium audio system with an interface for Pandora Internet radio and Bluetooth audio-streaming capabilities
            Bluetooth technology for hands-free calling
The automaker’s i-MID intelligent display system with five-inch LCD screen and Si-exclusive power meter
            A one-touch power moonroof
Satellite-linked navigation with voice recognition and integrated multi-angle rearview camera system
            A leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel
            Aluminum pedals and gearshift knob
Safety measures such as Honda’s new SmartVent airbags
Si-exclusive design cues, including a restyled rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome-tipped exhaust, and a revised front-end appearance highlighted by a chrome-accented honeycomb grille and prominent front bumper

Perhaps best of all, the price of admission to the 2013 Honda Civic Si is under $23,000: MSRPs begin at $22,515 for the coupe model and $22,715 for the sedan.

Honda Steps up to the Plate for Little Leaguers

Now in its 17th season, Honda’s national support for Little League Baseball and Softball has grown from its original efforts in Los Angeles and Harlem to reach more than 250 individual leagues in almost 100 cities across the country. This year, however, the company faced one of its biggest baseball challenges yet: The 32 teams in the Staten Island (New York) Little League saw their fields and facilities extensively damaged by Hurricane Sandy, putting the 2013 season in jeopardy.

“For 17 years Honda has enjoyed a relationship with Little League Baseball and Softball. We’re proud to play a part in getting Staten Island Little League up and running to make it possible for kids to play ball this year,” added Susie Rossick, senior manager for regional marketing for American Honda.

Honda didn’t balk when it came to helping out. Not only did the company donate $50,000 to assist in rebuilding and repair efforts, but it also hosted a variety of fundraising events, such as games of musical chairs held in a new Honda Odyssey minivan.

“I was extremely surprised when I was notified by Honda about receiving the $50,000 grant,” said Michael Colini, president of the Staten Island Little League. “Everyone sees on the news how Staten Island was affected structurally, but no one thinks of the families and kids that the storm affected, I cannot think of a better way to express our gratitude than by making sure our kids can get out on the diamond and play ball!”

It’s not just the players who will benefit from Honda’s support for Little League. The company is also hosting the Honda Win Big (or Small) Sweepstakes, with prizes ranging from a 2013 Honda Odyssey to $25 gift cards to digital photos of a previously chewed piece of bubble gum (seriously). Facelifted Guangzhou-Honda Everus S1 debuts in China

The facelifted Guangzhou-Honda Everus sedan debuted yesterday evening in Shanghai, just before the start of the Shanghai Auto Show that begins tomorrow. The Honda Crider concept debuted at the same event. Everus is a sub-brand of the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture. The current Everus S1, so far the brand’s one and only car, was launched on the Chinese car market in May 2011. The facelifted S1 will be launched in May.

The current Guangzhou-Honda Everus S1. Price starts at 69.800 yuan and ends at 99.800 yuan. The Everus S1 is based on the last gen Honda City sedan which was made in China by Guangzhou-Honda. Engines are old-Honda too: 1.3 with 80hp and 116nm and a 1.5 with 103hp and 136nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. The engines will continue in the facelifted Everus S1 and price will be about the same.

Front certainly looks a lot better with mad concept-like lines and LED-thingies in the headlights and bumpers.

Rear lights changed for the crazy too, compare:

The Everus S1 is not a great success. This example is seen in a Guangzhou-Honda dealer. Back in 2011 Guangzhou-Honda said Everus was going to have its own dealer network when more models arrived. But they never did, two years later now and the Everus S1 is still very alone.

Dash is the same as in the current Si except for sportier dials and the radio-unit has been replaced with a techy touch screen.

The Honda Concept M has debuted on the Shanghai Auto Show and we are very impressed. This is by far the baddest grille we have seen on the show this year, even outdoing all the Chinese auto makers who know a thing or two about making impressive grilles on concept cars. Chrome, lights, red paint!, the Concept M has it all.

The Honda Concept M previews a new large MPV that will be positioned above the current Honda Elysion, it is developed especially for the Chinese market and will be launched ‘soon’, or so Honda said. The Elysion is made in China by the Dongfeng-Honda joint venture, and they will get the Honda Jade too. It seems thus likely the Concept M will go to the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture. Honda didn’t say anything about power too but the rumor mill said 3.5 V6 and hybrid.

Chrome parts at the bumper give the Concept M a space ship look. The Chinese car market will probably like it very much, especially with all the chrome on.

Great machine, now get it to the market unchanged!

Introducing the "Concept M" new-value MPV concept model

The Concept M is a concept vehicle for the MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment developed mainly for Chinese market. Currently, commercial vehicles account for the majority of the MPV market in China. To such an MPV market, Honda will introduce a new-value vehicle that offers the attributes of a passenger car while adding new value through the realization of a comfortable and spacious cabin space made possible by Honda's packaging technologies, and the fun of driving. The Concept M was designed by the design studio at the Automobile R&D Center of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. in Japan. Honda is making progress in the development of a mass-production vehicle based on this concept model aiming for market introduction next year.

Honda gets aggressive with range of new models

Japanese carmaker Honda Motor Co is hoping to achieve a jump in sales by introducing an unprecedented lineup tailor-made for the Chinese market through its two joint ventures at the ongoing Shanghai auto show.
This is a continuation of the automaker's mid-term plan for the market unveiled last April.
The company announced its intent to introduce more than 10 new models, including small-displacement cars and plug-in hybrids, before 2015 with the goal of doubling annual sales compared to 2011, when nearly 618,000 units were sold.
Honda's latest Earth Dreams powertrain technology will be applied for the first time in China to the all-new Accord, a popular mid-sized sedan that will be locally made by the automaker's joint venture Guangqi Honda in the southern city of Guangzhou.
The all-new Accord will go on sale in September.
According to the mid-term strategy, by 2015 all the models under Honda brands sold in China will be equipped with this powertrain.
"Honda will strengthen its mid-term strategy and create a beautiful future with Chinese customers by bringing them more new products that have new value, fun and convenience," said Seiji Kuraishi, president of Honda Motors China.
The models by Honda and its Chinese joint ventures that will be making a global premiere at the show include the Crider sedan, the Concept M MPV and the Jade, an avant-garde sedan.
Aimed at the acutely competitive mid-sized segment, the Crider is Honda's first model that features an international design language fused with Chinese cultural elements.
The company began accepting orders for the 1.8-liter Crider, produced at Guangqi Honda, on April 19, and it will go on sale starting in June.
Guangqi Honda will also launch a new Everus S1 compact sedan in May.
Created in 2008, the Everus is the joint venture's wholly owned brand.
Toshiaki Mikoshiba, president of Guangqi Honda, said these new products will help the joint venture increase sales in coming years.
By 2020, the joint venture is hoping to achieve 1 million units in annual sales, or more than triple the total for last year.
It sold 316,000 cars in 2012, a decline of 12.7 percent, as a result of an aggressive new product offensive by competitors and an anti-Japan backlash among consumers resulting from territorial disputes over the Diaoyu Islands between China and Japan.
Honda's overall sales in China tumbled by 3.1 percent to 599,000 units last year.
The Jade will be built at the company's other joint venture, Dongfeng Honda, and will hit the market in September.
The Concept M's production model is expected to go on sale in China next year, according to Honda, though the company did not reveal which joint venture will produce it.

Honda bets big on diesel power

              http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/b...w/19695601.cms

KOLKATA: Diesel will power Honda's dreams of capturing a larger share of the Indian market. Over the next three years, the Japanese automaker will launch four new cars, including the new generation premium hatch Jazz and premium sedan City, all powered by the 1.5-litre diesel engine that it has introduced in the newly launched entry-level sedan Amaze.
Speaking to TOI, Honda SIEL Cars India senior vice-president (sales & marketing) Jnaneswar Sen said the new i-DTEC engine would drive Honda's new offensive. The engine will be at the heart of the new generation Jazz that will be launched next year, replacing the earlier Jazz that was discontinued this February. The new City with again the same engine will follow either 2014-end or early 2015-beginning.
The engine will also power two other cars: compact SUV that was showcased at the Detroit Motor Show and yet-to-be unveiled seven-seater multi-purpose vehicle. Honda does have a seven-seater MPV named Freed based on the last generation Jazz platform but the new seven-seater will be based on the brio platform to achieve cost competitiveness with Maruti Suzuki's Ertega.

"Apart from introduction of diesel engine, the company is focusing heavily on benchmarking its price with the segment leader (in most cases, Maruti Suzuki). Getting the price right is crucial. We have achieved that in the Brio and Amaze. And that will be true for all the cars that we introduce. That is why Brio and Amaze share 70% of parts and have common looks. The same will be true for cars launched on the new generation Jazz platform," the senior V-P said.
By 2015-end, all cars except Brio, Accord and CR-V will have diesel variants. While Honda has showcased a 1.6 litre CR-V in Europe, it is not a priority in India as the segment is still very small. Ditto for premium limo Accord.
Honda SIEL has withdrawn its mid-level sedan Civic from the market as the segment has shrunk. Last year, sales clocked for the entire segment was lower than the number of Civic cars that Honda used to sell two-three years ago. "We may look at the segment again at a later date. But there are no plans at the moment. Honda SIEL is working full throttle on the new Jazz, City, mini-SUV and MPV projects now," the official said.
Acknowledging that Honda SIEL had been at a huge disadvantage over the past two-three years due to rapid shift to diesel, Sen said the i-DTEC engine would allow Honda to compete in 50% of the market, up from the current 10%. "In the upper C-segment, we are the no. 2 player (Hyundai Verna is no.1) with only the petrol City. Every other competitor has a diesel variant,"" he pointed out.
The company is also jacking up its outlet count from 103 in 97 cities to 162 in 102 cities with the focus on tier II, III cities and upcountry areas as it expects 63% of Amaze sales from there. Expecting phenomenal growth in sales from the initiatives, Honda SIEL plans to invest Rs 2,500 crore in its new plant at Takapura, Rajasthan on diesel engine, assembly and forging. While its assembly-line capacity will go up from 1.2 lakh to 2.4 lakh, it will be able to produce 1.6 lakh engines and forge 10 lakh pieces. Incidentally, India is Honda's only centre worldwide where diesel engines parts are manufactured, assembled and sold.

              http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/24/h...nt-green-cars/

Honda boss says Chinese drivers don't want green cars

According to The Wall Street Journal, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito believes that China's nascent car-buying demographic isn't all that interested in hybrid cars – at least not yet. The emissions story doesn't resonate with them, and certainly not for the higher purchase premium such models usually carry. What they really want, Ito believes, is reliable, affordable cars that fit their needs. When it comes to Honda sales, the numbers would appear to jibe with his thoughts: Honda sold 598,577 vehicles in China last year through its two joint ventures, yet just 542 of them were hybrids – not even a tenth of a percent. However, Toyota sold 840,500 cars in China last year, and two percent of that total, 17,300 units, were hybrids, which is closer to the still-piddling three-percent ratio of sales that Toyota posted in the US last year.

Honda offers the Insight, Fit Hybrid and CR-Z in China and plans to make components for its Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system there from next year, the hope being it will reduce the cost of hybrid cars for local buyers. That was one part of the plan Honda laid out last year to popularize its IMA system in China. Other initiatives include the introduction of a new hybrid system for mid-sized and large vehicles and a plug-in hybrid. Among the four new vehicles Honda showed during this weekend's press day for the Shanghai Motor Show (including the Concept M minivan pictured above) there was not a single hybrid among them.

Honda Unit to Build 27 Megawatt Wind Power Station in Brazil

              http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...in-brazil.html

A unit of Honda Motor Co. (7267) in Brazil will invest about 100 million reals ($50 million) in a wind farm.
It will be built in the city of Xangri-la in Rio Grande do Sul and is expected to start running in Sept. 2014, the company said in a statement.
The project by Honda Automoveis do Brasil Ltda. will have 9 turbines and a total capacity of 27 megawatts, according to Tomohiro Okada, a Honda spokesman.

Honda to stop making Civic in India due to poor sales

              http://paultan.org/2013/04/23/honda-...to-poor-sales/

Honda will no longer produce Civics in India due to falling sales. The decision to pull the plug on the sedan is backed by dismal sales of just over 50,000 units since its launch in 2006.
Honda India’s marketing and sales boss Jnaneswar Sen told The Hindu’s Business Line that sales of the Civic have been falling steadily over the years with smaller models such as the City eating into figures. The last Civic was sold in March. “We felt there was no point in investing in a segment that was declining over the last three years,” he added.
Honda, which is the fifth largest brand in India, isn’t the only company facing this situation. In the subcontinent, the Civic fights Toyota’s Corolla and Hyundai’s Elantra in what they call the lower D-segment. Sales in this class have dropped 29% to 19,239 units in 2012-13 over the previous year. It’s clear that India prefers smaller cars like the 25.8 km/l Honda Brio Amaze Diesel.
On another note, it has been reported that Honda will launch a new Jazz next year, before a fresh City sedan, SUV, and an MPV from the same platform roll out. The latter should not be confused with a new “Brio MPV” that we expect to see at this year’s Indonesia International Motor Show.

Proton Perdana replacement model could use Honda Accord chassis and Petronas engine – reports

Here’s a break from our Auto Shanghai 2013 coverage, and the topic is none other than our national carmaker Proton. The Star reports that Proton is expected to reveal a series of announcements in the next 12 months, including updates on the collaboration with Honda and the launch of new models.
Besides the expected arrival of the P3-22A Preve Hatchback, of which disguised units have been spotted testing frequently by our readers, the report touches on a Perdana replacement model (PRM). The PRM will be a fruit of the Proton-Honda collaboration agreement that came to surface last October.
The daily’s unidentified source said that Proton has plans to use the Honda Accord chassis as the basis for PRM, but the Proton model would look different. There was no mention whether the Accord in question is the new one recently launched in Thailand, or the outgoing Accord currently on sale here.

“The PRM, though based on the Accord, would still entail cosmetic changes, and the engine could be based on the 2.0 litre Petronas engines Proton bought last year,” he said.
In December 2012, Proton acquired all of Petronas’ engine technologies as well as the associated technology patents at a cost of RM63 million. The deal encompasses seven engine technologies as well as 117 technology patents.
Back then, Proton chairman Datuk Seri Khamil Jamil was quoted in a Bernama report as saying that the acquisition gives his company immediate ownership of a family of normally-aspirated engines and turbocharged 2.0 litre engines, as well as a 2.2 litre turbocharged version to complement its existing Campro engine line-up. Click here for the full story.

The newspaper’s mystery source adds that Honda’s expansion in Malaysia will need a higher degree of localisation, which in turn will include the stamping of parts, and there are only a few companies in the Malaysia that are capable of doing so. “It is natural for Honda to choose Proton as a partner based on the long working relationship between Honda and DRB-Hicom,” he added.
Before Proton and Honda decided to work together, the national carmaker entered into a MoU with Nissan in March 2011 to conduct feasibility studies on areas of cooperation, including the potential use of Nissan platforms and powertrains. It was also rumoured that the Perdana replacement model will be based on the Nissan Fuga, but that, and the wider Proton-Nissan relationship didn’t work out.
The aborted Fuga-Perdana deal was said to be for high-level government official use only, unlike the earlier Lancer-Inspira deal with Mitsubishi. So if there’s truth in the Accord-Perdana speculation, we might or might not be able to buy a “Proton Accodana” with a cheaper price. Time will tell.

Investing Idea: Smart Home - Smart Energy; Honda Motor (HMC) Environmental Innovation
"Zero Net Energy" concept home will efficiently generate and manage renewable energy; Solar power will charge Honda Fit EV
Ideas get bigger when you share them...
Point Roberts, WA - April 24, 2013 (Investorideas.com renewable energy newswire) Investorideas.com staff: Investorideas.com, an investor research portal specializing in investing ideas in leading sectors issues a news and trading alert for Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) , trading at $40.24 , up 0.34(0.85%) 11:21AM EDT on over 220,000 shares following news on Honda Smart Homes.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced its plan to create the Honda Smart Home US, a showcase for environmental innovation and renewable energy enabling technologies that demonstrates Honda vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, including the use of solar power to charge a Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicle. A groundbreaking today at the construction site on the campus of the University of California, Davis, marked the start of the building process, which will be documented and shared through the Honda Smart Home US website.
"We are excited by the opportunity for our scientists to test new ideas for integrated and commercially viable carbon-reduction technologies."
Envisioning a lifestyle of renewable energy for home and transportation, the Honda Smart Home US will feature new and emerging technologies to greatly reduce the amount of energy consumed by individual households, and will provide a pathway for the full integration of electric vehicles into the home.
The hi-tech sustainable home will demonstrate an approach to meeting the state of California's goal of requiring all new residential construction to be "zero net energy" by 2020. It is expected to produce more energy than it consumes, using less than half of the energy of a similarly sized new home in the Davis area for heating, cooling, and lighting.
The Honda Smart Home will also give its occupants comprehensive control over all home systems, allowing the residents to remotely and continually monitor and adjust all aspects of energy use in real time.
Among the many technologies that will be applied to the Honda Smart Home US:
              • Solar Power SystemA photovoltaic (PV) system will provide the energy for the home and for daily commuting in an all-electric vehicle like the Honda Fit EV. The zero net energy home will generate, on average, more electricity from on-site renewable power sources than it will receive from its electric utility provider.
              • Honda Energy Management System
The Honda Energy Management System introduces a smart-grid technology that will actively manage energy use and communicate with the homeowner and utility provider, allowing the home to maximize its energy efficiency while responding to the needs of the electrical grid, thereby minimizing the impacts of solar generation and electric vehicle charging on the utility grid.
              • High-efficiency HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and Lighting System designed by UC Davis
UC Davis energy research centers will design high-efficiency, cost effective solutions to major home energy loads. UC Davis researchers will explore new methods for geothermal heating and cooling, and a new circadian color control logic LED lighting system to improve quality of life while reducing energy consumption.
              • Direct solar PV-to-vehicle charging
Direct PV-to-vehicle DC battery charging will substantially improve charging efficiency by reducing losses associated with DC-to-AC and AC-to-DC conversion. "PV-to-EV" charging will decrease CO2 emitted in the lifecycle of an electric vehicle by avoiding the carbon associated with grid electricity production.
              • Certified "Green" Home
The home will be designed to achieve top-level green building certifications from the major U.S. rating systems. With a holistic approach to sustainability, the home will feature passive design elements as well as novel materials to further reduce CO2 emissions from the production of building materials and the construction and operation of the home.
Honda anticipates construction of the Honda Smart Home, at a site in the UC Davis West Village development, to be completed by the end of 2013. The home will be leased to individuals associated with UC Davis, though further details have not been finalized.

In 2012, Honda unveiled the Honda Smart Home System (HSHS) in the city of Saitama, Japan. The HSHS project includes two homes: one is a demonstration-only home while the other serves as a residence for Honda associates. Both feature comprehensive controls of in-house energy supply and demand, and help manage both the generation and consumption of energy for the home.
              Executive Quotes
"With Honda Smart Home US we will showcase our vision for a lifestyle that produces zero CO2 and that could even save consumers money," said Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Home energy use and personal mobility account for most of an individual's carbon emissions. By addressing both sources together, we are advancing technologies that will reduce carbon and eventually transform home design."
"As an academic leader in sustainability research, UC Davis is proud to be the site of this innovative research home, which will take us to the next level of energy research and deployment," said Energy Efficiency Center director Nicole Woolsey Biggart. "We are excited by the opportunity for our scientists to test new ideas for integrated and commercially viable carbon-reduction technologies."
              About UC Davis
UC Davis has long served as a proving ground for innovations in environmental sustainability. Sierra Magazine named UC Davis the nation's #1 Cool School in its 2012 ranking of the country's greenest colleges. In 2011, UC Davis West Village opened its doors and is on track to become the nation's largest planned zero net energy community. Four UC Davis building complexes are certified LEED Platinum, the highest ranking awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. Aggressive recycling, composting and reuse efforts prevent more than 63 percent of campus waste from entering landfills annually. Through its Climate Action Plan, the campus has reduced greenhouse gas emissions below year 2000 levels and expects to reach year 1990 levels by 2020. The campus also boasts more than 42 miles of bike paths and more than 20,000 bike racks, earning it a gold award from the League of American Bicyclists.
              About Honda Environmental Leadership
Honda is a leader in the development of leading-edge technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Honda has led the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) rankings of overall vehicle environmental performance since 2000, and a Honda vehicle has topped the list of America's greenest vehicles from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for eleven out of the past twelve years. Honda teams up with Sekisui House on smart home robots

With one in five Japanese citizens now aged 65 or older, various robotics technologies are being developed to prolong independent living and improve quality of life at home. The main alternative to nursing homes and hospitals would be smart homes designed around the needs of the elderly. Earlier this week, Honda announced that it will test some of its life support robots in a mock household environment at the Future Life Showroom, in Sekisui House's brand new SUMUFUMU Lab.

Honda's robotics program, famous for its humanoid robot mascot ASIMO, has branched out to include transportation devices that are the focus of this experiment. The UNI-CUB – Honda's answer to the Segway – is a personal mobility vehicle that started life as the unicycle-like U-3X. It's more compact than you might think, and is surprisingly maneuverable inside a home for those who have difficulty walking.

The Walking Assist Device with Bodyweight Support System is the other robotic device taking part in these tests. It's a lower-body exoskeleton that supports some of your weight, reducing the load on the leg muscles and joints. You sit on a seat, slide your feet into its shoes, and let the robotic legs assist you as you climb stairs or crouch to pick something up. This device has also been tested in Honda's factories where employees often suffer back injuries from repeated crouching.

Both of these robots were initially showcased in an office environment, but now Honda will explore the broader potential in their applications around the home. This push will hopefully alleviate some of the pressure on the health care workers who must care for Japan's rapidly-aging society in the coming decade.

For its part, Sekisui House has been engineering ergonomic living spaces for nearly 40 years. In 1990 it opened a "Comprehensive Housing Institute," which puts the company ahead of the industry in the development of smart homes and related technologies. Earlier, Sekisui House teamed up with Nissan to develop a power system between a house and electric cars.

In its press release, Honda explains that the two companies will evaluate the project on an ongoing basis to accelerate the development of practical residential robotics technology and establish a collaborative business model moving forward.

Designer Envisions Sporty Honda R-EV Concept for Asian Teens

Electric cars for the masses is a relatively fresh concept in the automotive industry, and one that still has a long way to go before it can compete in numbers with sales of conventional engine passenger vehicles for a number of reasons, ranging from the costs associated with the technology, to reliability and infrastructure. However, make no mistake; we will see battery-powered cars increasing in numbers (in terms of both models and their overall market share) over the years.

Naturally, automotive designers don't have to wait for these problems to be solved when it comes to imagining electric car concepts like the Honda R-EV (short for "Racing-Electric Vehicle"), created by Jex Chau (Wing Huen Chau) from Hong Kong.

As the 24-year old industrial design graduate of RMIT University explains, "The Racing Electric Vehicle or R-EV is a compact sports vehicle targeting towards urban Asian teenage markets."

Chau added: "It is designed to provide them with excitement, independence in a densely populated urban environment and self-expression through personalize potential of this road and club racing vehicle. R-EV is capable of a leisure drive in the city, excitement during the race, and provides a personal space for social activity."

As you can see in the image gallery that follows below, Chau designed the R-EV to easily transform its appearance from a regular road model to a more aggressive looking sports car.

Honda Smart Home Houses New Zero-Carbon Technologies

Already helping folks save energy when they leave the house, American Honda is now ready to do the same <em>in</em> the house—by breaking ground on the Honda Smart Home US on the campus of the University of California, Davis.
“As an academic leader in sustainability research, UC Davis is proud to be the site of this innovative research home, which will take us to the next level of energy research and deployment,” said Nicole Woolsey Biggart, director of the university’s Energy Efficiency Center. “We are excited by the opportunity for our scientists to test new ideas for integrated and commercially viable carbon-reduction technologies.”
Biggart speaks with a sense of urgency, too, since California is working to require all new residential construction to draw zero net energy from the state’s power grid by 2020. To achieve this, the Honda Smart Home was designed to create more power than it uses, while using less power than the average home in the area consumes. More specifically, the high-efficiency home will showcase:
                • A photovoltaic array that provides power for both the home and a Honda Fit EV
                • Honda’s Energy Management System, with smart-grid technology to optimize the home’s energy usage in relation to activity on the local power grid
                • High-efficiency heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, to be designed by UC Davis to leverage geothermal heating and cooling
                • Direct solar-to-car vehicle charging to eliminate parasitic energy losses that result from converting electricity from DC to AC and vice versa

“With Honda Smart Home US we will showcase our vision for a lifestyle that produces zero CO2 and that could even save consumers money,” said Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office of American Honda. “Home energy use and personal mobility account for most of an individual’s carbon emissions. By addressing both sources together, we are advancing technologies that will reduce carbon and eventually transform home design.”

                Diesel Civic even more frugal

Honda is one of the world's most trusted and recognisable brands but the giant car maker has taken a series of hits in recent years, resulting in its market share dropping quite dramatically.
But with the global financial crisis, the tsunami in Japan and Thailand floods now behind it, Honda has made a strong start to 2013 and is making up lost ground.
In the first three months of the year its sales have jumped 80 per cent compared with the same period last year, making it the fastest-growing mainstream manufacturer selling cars in Australia.
And while the numbers may still be down the lower end of the chart, Honda has recovered to the extent where the company is now commanding the same market share it had five years ago.
To capitalise on this growth it is now introducing diesel engines to the Australian market for the first time.
The popularity of diesels is growing in Australia and it is the preferred power source in the SUV segment, with more than 60 per cent of buyers opting for oil burners.
Honda has selected the Civic Hatch to be the first recipient of its 1.6-litre turbo-diesel but it will also be available in its CR-V in the SUV category - where more than 60 per cent of buyers opt for diesel - by the end of the year.
While high-tech petrol engines are still the preferred choice of most buyers in the small car segment, the move will enable Honda to compete against market leaders like the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Hyundai i30 that all offer diesel variants.
And with an official fuel consumption of just 4.0L/100km, it is more efficient than the Civic hybrid that uses 4.6L/100km. That also makes it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment, with only a handful of cars with a better consumption rate.
Honda has also priced it pretty sharply, with a starting price of $26,990 plus on-road costs. But the lack of an automatic transmission might prevent the edgy hatchback from fulfilling its full sales potential.
Honda Australia boss Stephen Collins has said that he would be keen to get an auto shifter for the diesel variants but it is simply not available.
While it might only be available with a six-speed manual transmission it comes stacked with a host of standard features, including 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, reverse camera, dual-zone climate control, auto stop/start and Hill Start Assist.
The new Civic also has an excellent smart seating system that enables users to fold the rear seat bases up to liberate a huge amount of space behind the front two seats.
Remarkably, the diesel is 70kg lighter than the petrol model thanks to some innovative weight saving and construction technology and, as such, the little 1.6-litre engine generates 88kW and maximum torque of 230 Newton metres.

Honda Can Keep Rolling On U.S. Sales As Long As China Isn't A Spoiler

Honda Motors (NYSE:HMC) is scheduled to announce its Q4 earnings on April 26. The most important factor influencing the movement of the Japanese stocks lately has been the yen devaluation. The yen has depreciated more than 20% in the last 3-4 months, which has sent the Japanese stocks soaring on expectations of heftier overseas profits. As a resultant, Honda’s stock has surged in excess of 30% in the last six months.
The impact of a weak yen might not be significant in the upcoming earnings since the companies generally have their currencies hedged for the next few months. For fiscal 2013 (i.e. April’12- March’13), the automaker expects the effective exchange rate to approximately equal to 81 yen to a dollar, whereas the current exchange rate is close to 100 [Honda Investor Relations]. So, we don’t expect the weak yen to play a big part in the fourth-quarter earnings. Maybe from the first quarter of fiscal 2014, one can expect the effect of a weak yen to reflect on the income statement.

It is also important to note that the impact of a weak yen might not be as significant for Honda, as compared to other auto companies such as Toyota, since only a fraction of its vehicles are exported from Japan. Vehicles exported from Japan will tend to have higher margins since the expenses will be incurred in yen, but the overseas profits will inflate when translated back to yen. However, to take advantage of a weak currency, Honda is opening a new plant in Japan, its first in almost 50 years. The plant will have a capacity of 250,000 units, and will be primarily used to manufacture compact cars like the Fit.

Spy Shots: last-generation Honda CR-V will Return in China

Spy shots of the last-generation Honda CR-V testing in China. Chinese media say (as we said much earlier) that the old CR-V will return to the Chinese car market this year as a budget alternative to the new Honda CR-V which was launched in February last year. The new Honda CR-V is made in China by the Dongfeng-Honda joint venture that also made the last-gen Honda CR-V.

The current Dongfeng-Honda CR-V. Price starts at 193.800 yuan and ends at 262.800 yuan. Price of the new-old Honda CR-V will start around 170.o00 yuan. Earlier on we saw one spy shot of the old Honda CR-V with a Ciimo badge. Ciimo is a sub-brand of the Dongfeng-Honda joint venture, aimed at making cheap cars for the masses. The picture seemed to indicate the old CR-V was going to continue as a Ciimo, but apparently it will go as a Honda anyway.

The old CR-V was a hugely popular car in China, and the joint venture’s decision to kick it back to live a few years more is therefore very understandable. And why not? The platform is still modern enough for Chinese standards, and the Honda-brand is very strong, no matter the island row between China and Japan.

Honda sales stay on roll in April, up 7% on strong CR-V, RDX demand

                  http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/...-april-up.html

Two East Liberty-made crossovers helped Honda Motor Co. (NYSE:HMC) notch an April sales boost.

American Honda Motor Co., the automaker’s sales arm, said Wednesday total sales in April were up 7.4 percent to 130,999 vehicles, driven by record results for the East Liberty-made CR-V, the Acura RDX, which comes off the same Ohio production line, and the Acura SUV segment as a whole.

CR-V set its April sales record with 26,519 sold, up 12.2 percent from April 2012. The RDX capped its first year of a new redesign with its 12th-straight month of record sales. The 4,088 RDXs sold in April were up 106 percent from April 2012, the last month with the old RDX design.

The Acura SUV segment, including RDX and the MDX, moved a record 7,017 units in the month.

The Marysville-made Honda Accord once again was the company’s top seller with 33,500 cars sold. That is down 5.2 percent from April 2012, but the year-to-date sales for the model are up 26.4 percent.

Honda, Ford and Hyundai plan to target three Maruti models – Swift, Swift Dzire and Ertiga

                  http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...32.cms?curpg=2

Weeks after Honda launched the Amaze, hundreds of Maruti Suzuki sales staff were working overtime last weekend at the 'Dezirable Mileage Rally' across 34 cities. The rally aimed to prove that the Dzire offers best in class mileage.

"Maruti Suzuki is extremely nimble; it will not give away easily to competition," says an auto analyst from a leading brokerage house. "Over half a dozen premium hatchbacks were launched (competing with Swift) in 2009-10. And yet, Swift still sells as much as all other rival models put together," adds another industry analyst.

"It's not just the product that separates Maruti Suzuki from the others," says Bhargava. "It's the acceptance of the brand, sales and service network, perception of the customers on the value of the brand."

Many analysts agree. "Maruti Suzuki may lose a few percentage points in market share in the short term, but its brand equity is so strong that it would be a challenge for competition to sustain in the long term," says VG Ramakrishnan, managing director, Frost & Sullivan.

But rivals believe Maruti Suzuki does have chinks. Honda's Sen says Maruti Suzuki's large network alone is not enough. While this is an enabler, a product has to be backed by technology, quality, trust and pricing competitiveness, he argues, pointing to Honda's success against Maruti Suzuki in some segments. Honda's popular sedan, the City, sells three times more than Suzuki's SX4. Also, the Honda Brio petrol, a compact hatchback, sold 32,000 units, against 35,000 units of the Swift (petrol).

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, ended the final quarter of 2012-13 on a high. Net profit grew to Rs 1,147.5 crore compared with Rs 637.5 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Its EBITDA margin, excluding profits from the power-train unit, was 10.6%, up about 2.5 percentage points. Strong performance of the Swift and Swift DZire models, and incremental volumes of Ertiga, drove this rise. Around the bend, though, there's competition.

It's what is inside that counts ; The diesel engine from Honda that modern drivers have been waiting for. That's Roy Woodcock's verdict after testing... [Hull Daily Mail (England)]

(Hull Daily Mail (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) It's what is inside that counts ; The diesel engine from Honda that modern drivers have been waiting for. That's Roy Woodcock's verdict after testing the new 1.6-litre i- DTEC version of the good-looking Civic ...

The original Honda Civic in its current shape (that's 2006) made me go wow on looks alone and, as recently as last September, I was still raving about it in these columns. I said then that with its coupe styling and idiosyncratic touches, like the triangular exhaust pipes, I felt there were few betterlooking cars for the price on the road. It was even worth putting up with the visibility problems through the rear window caused by the prominent spoiler, I said.

All of which remains just as true in 2013. But what's making me go wow with the current additions to the range is Honda's new 1.6- litre diesel engine. The first from their Earth Dreams Technology series to be launched in Europe and debuting in the Civic (it will also be available this year in the new Honda CR-V).

What makes it so special Well, it pulls off the quite magical trick of balancing power (120 horsepower) and torque (221 lbs/ft at 2,000 rpm) with emissions of just 94 g/km of CO2, which means it qualifies for free road tax and congestion charge. Fuel economy is quoted as an impressive 78.5mpg and, in real world conditions, it was still high 50s mpg across more than 800 miles of all types of road.

For many years, Honda appeared to ignore the diesel option in favour of its impressive Vtec (variable valve timing) petrol powerplants, but this Swindon-built engine could just be the one we were all waiting for.

The trend for diesel engines has grown significantly in Europe and now represents 58 per cent of the C-segment market. In addition, engines emitting less than 120 g/km of CO2 now represent 45 per cent of the same market, so this new Civic 1.6-litre i-DTEC addresses (and hits the front) of both of these trends.

The remit for the futuristically-named Earth Dreams Technology unit was, in Honda's words, to balance environmental efficiency with dynamic performance to create a eco-focused and efficient car that was still fun to drive. It has done all of that.

Honda's Swindon factory can now turn out 500 of these engines a day and the philosophy behind it will now be applied to all new power trains of the future.

The designers of this ninth-generation Civic wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car's character but tweak them to express a more dynamic feel. The car is 20mm lower and 10mm wider than its predecessor, giving it a squatter, more purposeful stance. This blended body features smarter aerodynamics, including a rear light cluster that works as an aerodynamic spoiler, managing air flow over the top and sides of the car. The interior is focused around the driver and, like the eighth generation car, features a split-level instrument binnacle.

One area where clear strides could be made was in the perceived quality of the cabin. The old car featured quite a lot of scratchy hard plastics but this ninth generation model alters its approach to meet a far more demanding European customer base. Class-leading boot space and versatile seating boost its credentials for family buyers.

Prices for this 1.6-litre diesel variant have been kept quite competitive, starting at just under Pounds 20,000 for the SE model (as tested), just over that figure for the plusher ES variant and a little more than Pounds 23,000 for the top-of-the- range EX.

The specification for this trio of Civics is identical to the equivalent 2.2-litre i-DTEC cars, but with the addition of revised 16in alloy wheels. The range-topping EX has also been treated to a few more goodies in the shape of front and rear parking sensors, an autodimming rear view mirror and DAB digital radio. Standard equipment that's new to this generation Civic range includes Honda's Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) 5in dashboard screen which displays relevant driving details such as mpg, climate and audio settings. Other additions include a rear wiper, daytime running lights and a headlight-off timer that maintains illumination for 15 seconds after the car is locked. The entry-level SE trim also includes 16in alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning and USB connectivity for compatible MP3 audio devices.

The ES specification adds cruise control with a speed limiter, rear view parking camera, keyfob-operated windows and door mirror folding, plus auto up/down electric rear windows. Additional kit on ES models includes dual-zone air-conditioning, Bluetooth hands-free telephone, front fog lamps, auto headlights and wipers, leather steering wheel and gear knob, ambient interior lighting and six- speaker audio system.

The new Civic 1.6-litre i-DTEC retains the Civic's practicality, exceptional cabin space and unrivalled versatility. The Civic has the most spacious interior in the C-segment and classleading boot capacity of 401 litres, which can be increased by a further 76 litres by utilising the convenient under-floor compartment.

The Civic offers 1,431mm of shoulder room between driver and front seat passenger and 795mm of tandem distance (between driver and rear seat passenger). Between the front seats there is storage for two one-litre bottles and two 350ml bottles. Power outlet, USB and aux-in ports are also included.

Honda's unique Magic Seat system contributes to the Civic's unrivalled versatility. The Magic Seats enable a range of seating configurations for maximum versatility. The rear seats lift up, fold over and lock down in one easy movement and the 60:40 split folding design creates near-endless configurations for your ever changing requirements.

In a simple motion, the rear seatbacks can be folded down completely to give a flat boot space that is 1,600mm long and 1,350mm wide.

The resulting space is large enough to carry three mountain bikes (with the front wheels detached), three extra-large cases or three large golf bags, for example. The rear seat cushions can also be flipped up to reveal ample floor space for carrying tall objects. A 60:40 split in the seat base offers even more options for carrying both people and cargo. It also offers an alternative load area if access via the tailgate is limited.

We've come a long way in a short space of time. Honda's 138PS 2.2- litre diesel in the last shape Civic managed 53.3mpg and emitted 140g/ km. This 1.6-litre unit isn't quite as powerful, at 120PS, but its economy and emissions figures are of a different realm.

I really enjoyed my time with this car. When other manufacturers might have been considering a radical external redesign, Honda have come up with a magnificent engine addition that will keep this car current and desirable for a new generation of motorists.

                  Honda 'achieves UK job-cuts target'

JAPANESE car giant Honda has achieved its target of cutting hundreds of jobs at its UK site mainly through voluntary redundancy, the company says.

Honda said at the start of the year it needed to cut 800 jobs at the Swindon factory because of a downturn in the European market.
New company figures showed there have been 38 compulsory redundancies, all non-production, office roles.
A total of 525 workers have taken a voluntary redundancy package, and a further 200 vacant roles were no longer required as a result of a restructure of Honda's Swindon operation.
Director Kim Ballamy said: "We've worked hard with associate representatives, individuals and trade unions to minimise the impact on associates and their families.
"Through this consultation process and by streamlining our manufacturing operations we've listened and responded in as positive a way as possible. It's always difficult to lose good people, however, I believe this is a good outcome given the challenge we faced. In the markets, we do expect Europe to remain tough for a least another two years.
"By taking these actions we are ensuring Honda in Swindon is structured and manned to meet the challenging period ahead".
Around 3000 workers are now based at Swindon, building the Civic, Jazz and CR-V at a rate of just under 600 cars per day for the UK and European markets.

Subaru Recalling Cars for Curling Mats, Nissan for Spare Tire Inflation and Honda Over ESC

In its latest release, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shared detailed information on three separate and unrelated recalls from the same number of carmakers. We'll begin with Subaru, which is recalling 10,137 Forester SUVs made from January 2013 through March 2013 over an issue with the carpeted floor mats that may curl when exposed to heat. This can be a problem when it occurs with the driver-side floor mat as it can interfere with the "proper operation of one or a combination of, the vehicle's clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals". A similar issue had plagued Toyota causing one of the widely publicized sudden acceleration-related recalls.
Subaru told the safety agency that it will replace all four floor mats on the affected cars.
The next recall concerns Nissan and a little over 123,000 examples of its 2013 Altima (made from March 21, 2012, through March 26, 2013), over an issue with the spare tire. In particular, Nissan told the NHTSA that the spare tire in these vehicles "may have been significantly over- or under-inflated". The Japanese carmaker's dealers will do what regular owners should do from time to time anyway – "inspect and adjust the spare tire pressure".
As for the third recall, it affects 43,782 Honda Fit sub-compact models. (manufactured from May 23, 2011, through March 22, 2013) because of a problem related to the Electronic Stability Control software.
According to Honda, "The electronic stability control system of the affected vehicles may allow excessive yaw rates at high steering angles with certain tires. Excessive yaw rates prevent the proper function of the electronic stability control (ESC) system, increasing the risk of a crash."
Honda said it will update the ESC software free of charge with the recall to begin in the middle of May.

                    Reporting by Susan Hogan
                    By Holly Everett

(WPRI) – A potentially dangerous door lock issue in Honda CR-Vs is worrying a local man.

Reverend Kris Von Maluski, a priest from Newport, was alarmed when the doors in his CR-V began to lock and unlock on their own – even while he was driving.

According to Maluski, the door locks started acting up a few months ago. “I can’t lock my car, ever,” he said of his Honda.

While traveling, he said he had the ability to open any doors. That Honda defect forced Maluski to inadvertently break the law.

Federal law states that rear side doors must be equipped with at least one locking device, which when engaged, prevents operation of the interior door handle.

“Even the dome light doesn’t go on because the car is confused and thinks it’s locked, because it’s telling it that it’s unlocked,” Maluski explained. “So anyone can break in at anytime and take whatever they want.”

Similar complaints were found from other 2007-2009 CR-V owners on this website.

Honda told Call 12 for Action that the number of complaints about the door lock issue has been less than .02% in a 12-month period.

However, a spokesperson from Honda said they are now aware of this problem and are investigating a solution.

If you or someone you know is experiencing the same problem with door locks in a Honda CR-V, the car company would like to hear from you.

If you have any mechanical issue with your car, you must file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.

TS Trim adding 41 jobs, thanks to Honda deal
Canal Winchester will give its largest employer a 30-percent income tax credit

Thanks to a new partnership with Honda, TS Trim -- Canal Winchester's largest employer -- plans to add 41 jobs to its workforce and nearly $3 million to its payroll.

The city is offering the company a 30-percent income tax credit that it wasn't eligible for in October when it received approval to nearly double its manufacturing capacity with an 85,000-square-foot addition at its 6380 Canal St. location.

The new space was added in anticipation of the potential Honda of America work. At the time, however, the order from Honda hadn't been awarded yet and the expansion did not receive any specific incentives, although it was eligible for the 15-year, 100-percent tax abatement already covering the property, City Development Director Lucas Haire said.

With 401 employees, TS Trim is already Canal Winchester's largest employer.

"TS Trim is in the middle of an expansion on Canal Street, adding on to the building and consolidating work from their Diley Road location," he said. "This gave them the opportunity to bid on new work with the additional space and, during the design process, plan for it."

TS Trim has partnered with Honda to expand its capacity for producing parts for the automobile manufacturer.

"After winning the new work, they have new employees they need to hire that weren't budgeted for at the beginning," Haire said. "So we're offering them a 30-percent income tax credit, which is a similar deal as what we offered to Associates Title recently.

"The 41 new employees is a significant payroll gain, about $2.88 million, which we credit back 30 percent over three years if TS Trim maintains that employment level for five years."

The incentive will provide TS Trim with a 30-percent income tax credit for 41 new employees to be hired over the next two years; they are expected to be retained for five years.

This equates to a tax benefit of $67,000 for TS Trim over the three-year period and a direct benefit to the city of $340,000 over the five-year period, according to Haire.

"Hopefully, this will lead to even more opportunities to convert warehouse space into production space," Haire said. "There's still more room on that property to continue to expand the building, as well."

According to Haire, TS Trim intends to complete the expansion by the July 4 weekend, after its annual closure for retooling. The company will reopen at full capacity.

700-HP Electric Honda S2000 Built By High Schooler: Video

While most of us were worried about cliques, clothes, and kisses in our teens, this high school kid is building his own electric S2000. And he's doing it like an engineer.

From CAD designing and building his own parts to wiring and programming the hardware and software that control the car's electronics, S2KI forum member Juan Ehringeras (aka "thinmint") has tackled the project from the ground up. He even built the battery packs himself from component lithium polymer cells--and gave a TEDx talk along the way.

Why an electric S2000? Ehringer picked the car because it was inexpensive (he bought a damaged car) and offers good driving dynamics. Also, the S2000's relatively light weight from the factory was likely a factor. The builder has taken special care to balance the car's weight in electric form, having "strategically placed a majority of the weight [of the battery pack] over the rear axle."

With two electric motors hooked up in series, spinning a custom driveshaft into a Ford 8.8 rear end, the car's design puts it at 686 kW output, or about 920 horsepower before drivetrain losses. With the engines turning the driveshaft directly into the Ford rear end, driveline losses should be rather low. The builder makes a conservative estimate of 15 percent power loss, with a resulting 782 horsepower at the rear wheels.

Oh, and 1,500 pound-feet of torque at 0 rpm. There's some doubt about the ability to get the desired power from the motors chosen, but even at half the power and torque expected, the car would have nearly 400 horsepower and 750 pound-feet of torque at the wheels.

In other words, when finished, this should be one hellacious electric sports car--even if it weighs a bit more than the stock S2000 did. When asked how he manages to get so much done, Ehringer replied, "Well I am finally a senior in high school, so in my off time I do homework & work on this car. I also am a jetski enthusiast (stand up) and work at my business (Laser Werks). My business basically comprises of me designing things in CAD and cutting them on my laser."

Along the road to the electric conversion, Ehringer also found a way to add custom sequential LED taillights and keyless entry, hacked together from a Nike+ iPod dongle and an Arduino programmable controller.

Ehringer has run into many issues along the way, and is currently stuck on reliability and quality issues with his self-made charging system and a problem with differential vibration. Given the level of skill, ability, and problem solving exhibited so far in this build, we have every confidence he'll be able to bring this project to fruition.

We certainly hope he can, at least. We'd love to see the car in full-bore action. For now, you can see the car's first electric drive above.

Japan's yen drives gains for Honda

This automaker is a top way to benefit from a declining Japanese currency and a rising Japanese stock market.

As a means of playing the recovery in Japan, I suggest looking at some of the Japanese automakers with ADRs; I especially like Honda Motor (HMC +1.60%).

Honda is a great way to benefit from the decline in the Japanese yen since new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe demanded the introduction of an accelerated form of quantitative easing at the Bank of Japan. As the eighth largest auto producer in the world and the largest motorcycle maker, Honda is well placed to benefit from a cheaper yen.

Although Honda makes more than 90% of the cars it sells in North America in the U.S. and Canada, it still receives the benefit of reporting U.S. and Canadian sales in a weaker yen.

At 100 yens=1 U.S. dollars, Morgan Stanley calculates Japanese automakers' top lines will receive a boost of US$2,000 for each car they sell in the States (the exchange rate recently was 97.24 yens=1 U.S. dollars.

Plus, the weakness of the Japanese currency helps its sales in other markets such as China and India, against its Korean, U.S. and European rivals.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, Honda earned $3.9 billion, or $2.17 per share (figures in U.S. dollars), up 52% from $2.8 billion, or $1.43 per share, the year before. Sales were $105 billion, up 5% from $100 billion for the previous year.

The company will be raising its dividend 5% from 76 yens to 80 yens. This would put Honda at a forecast price-to-earnings ratio of 11.5 times and a dividend yield of 2.1%, compared to Toyota which has a forecast price-to-earnings ratio of 15.6 times and a 1.3% yield.

Cyclical industries such as automakers are stocks that should be bought and sold rather than held for the long term. This is the correct stage in the auto cycle to own these companies. As such, Honda is a "buy."

Honda Adds New Transmission Plant to Auto Plant in Mexico

Transmission plant will have annual production capacity of 350,000 units and will employ 1,500.

With the goal of establishing a “highly efficient production structure that maximizes local content in Mexico and the rest of North America’, Honda De Mexico announced last week that it will construct a new transmission plant in Celaya, near the city of Guanajuato.
This plant will be on the same site as the new automobile plant currently under construction that will begin production of the Honda Fit in spring 2014.
Transmission production will begin operation in the second half of 2015 with an annual production capacity of 350,000 units, with plans to more than double annual output in the coming years.
Employment of 1,500 new associates is expected when the plant reaches its full production capacity of approximately 700,000 units annually.
The new transmission plant, Honda's third in North America, will produce continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) for automobiles built in Mexico, where further market growth is expected, Honda said.
When the new transmission plant reaches full production, Honda's transmission capacity in North America will exceed 2 million units, and will support Honda's capacity to produce 1.92 million automobiles per year in the region.
"We are establishing a production base with outstanding global competitiveness in CVT production in the same location as our new automobile plant in Celaya," said Tetsuo Iwamura, COO of Honda North American Regional Operations. "As we continue to advance our commitment to build products close to the customer, we appreciate the strong support we have received here in Mexico."
Honda established its first Mexican manufacturing operations in September 1985. Two years later, Honda de Mexico started motorcycle import sales and, in March 1988, began production of motorcycle products and automobile service parts in El Salto, Jalisco. Automobile production began in 1995 with the Accord and, in 2007, production switched to the CR-V. Honda de Mexico has a current annual capacity of 63,000 automobiles.
With the new 200,000-unit Celaya automobile plant scheduled to begin operation in February 2014, Honda de Mexico's annual production capacity will increase to a total of 263,000 units. In 2012, Honda (IW 1000/30) sold 54,000 units in Mexico (up 150.6% from a year ago), with sales volume steadily increasing.
The new transmission plant in Mexico will join existing Honda transmission manufacturing operations in Ohio and Georgia, increasing Honda's annual transmission production capacity in North America from the current 1.375 million units to more than 1.7 million units in 2016, and to more than 2 million units when the Mexican plant reaches full capacity.

Tracking the Fuel Economy of Cars.com's 2013 Honda Civic, 2013 Subaru BRZ

Cars.com's long-term 2013 Honda Civic and 2013 Subaru BRZ have accumulated roughly 1,000 and 1,100 miles, respectively, since our previous update a month ago. Surprisingly, both are within 2.7 mpg of each other in overall observed gas mileage despite one being an enthusiast's sports coupe and the other a bean-counter's economy car.
                    Follow Our Long-Term Fleet
The Civic's highest tank average of 33.58 mpg is up from its previous best of 33.11 mpg and bumps the overall average up a few ticks to 28.53 mpg after 2,500 miles. Hold on: 28 mpg? The Civic has half the total miles of our BRZ; it joining the Cars.com long-term test fleet a few months after the Subaru and has far fewer highway miles under its timing belt. Our Civic's overall average hovers right on top of its EPA-estimated 28 mpg city rating.
The Civic rotates among Cars.com staffers just like the BRZ. The intention for both cars is to accumulate miles, though the Civic has yet to stretch its legs at highway speeds for very long with much of its use coming as a city commuter. The BRZ made a road trip from Chicago to Detroit right off the bat in January for its introduction at the 2013 Detroit auto show as Cars.com's Best of 2013 winner along with the 2013 Scion FR-S. Apparently some of the Cars.com staff enjoys self-inflicted pain, taking the stiff-riding BRZ on additional road trips, or maybe its fun factor is irresistible. In this update, the BRZ's best recorded tank average is set slightly higher at 30.8 mpg, up from 30.15 mpg.

Honda Cars India President Hironori Kanayama: The man who always challenges status quo

MUMBAI: In December of 2012, Hironori Kanayama, 59 years, president and CEO of Honda Cars India was on stage in front of hundreds of workers at its Greater Noida plant.
Kanayama, who was performing with Golden Mountain — a band of four Japanese musicians, on Honda Cars India's Foundation day, was strumming a guitar, to the tune of Socha hai ye tumne kabhi, from the movie Rockstar. Kanayama performed twice, for the workers of the Tapukura, Rajasthan plant and again, a week later, for the workers at Honda's Greater Noida plant. Honda Cars India was moving towards a new game plan and the Kanayama wants everyone involved - from events like the foundation day to reallife performance out in the market.

2013 Honda Civic Si Sedan: Video Review

In 2012, Honda launched a brand new Civic that was widely viewed as a step backward for the perennial small car all-star. Honda quickly moved to dramatically refresh the Civic lineup for 2013, upgrading both the design and feature set. We drove the sporty 2013 Honda Civic Si Sedan to test some of these new standard features, such as a rearview camera and BlueTooth HandsFreeLink.

You can read a transcription of the video review below.

Hi I'm Adam Morath for AOL Autos and we are here in Detroit, Michigan at the site of the Belle Isle Grand Prix. We have with us the all-new 2013 Honda Civic Si. Let's take it for a spin.

In 2012, Honda launched a brand new Civic that was not well received. Automotive journalists and consumers alike were really disappointed with what Honda brought to the table, so in 2013 they completely refreshed the Civic.

This Si that we're driving in, has chrome details, sort of a faux carbon fiber on the dashboard, some things to make it a bit sportier, but all of the Civics across the board have gotten a really nice interior upgrade and a facelift.

It's powered by a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine, good for 201 horsepower. The Si is a sportier model, so it only gets 25 miles to the gallon combined city/highway. That's not great, not terrible, but if you want better fuel economy there's a hybrid version and the standard Civic also gets better fuel economy.

The Civic lineup received some technological upgrades for 2013 as well, including Bluetooth Hands Free Link, which allows you to connect your phone, make calls with the push of a button, and also stream music over the radio.

Another new feature that now comes standard on all Civic models is the rearview camera, which can be viewed on the 5-inch LCD screen. Honda also improved handling and suspension on new Civic models, as well as upgrades, which make the cabin much quieter.

As you'd expect, the enhanced performance of the Si model commands a higher price. Its MSRP of $22,700 makes it about 5 grand more than the base Civic sedan. That's pretty pricy for a Civic but you do get 60 more horsepower.

I'm Adam Morath for AOL Autos.

Facelifted Guangzhou-Honda Everus S1 will hit the China car market on May 27

The facelifted Guangzhou-Honda Everus S1 sedan will hit the Chinese car market on May 27, it debuted on last month’s Shanghai Auto Show. The facelift includes a new grille, new head lights, new rear lights and new bumpers.
Everus is a sub-brand of the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture. The current Everus S1, so far the brand’s one and only car, was launched on the Chinese car market in May 2011.

The engines will continue in the facelifted car and price will be about the same.

New side skirts and sporty wheels make the S1 a little bit more hip.

Weird rare lights are a rare sign of creativity at Everus.

                      Dash unchanged.

Tokyo Motor Show: We’d love more hybrids in Europe, says Honda

Honda is keen to increase the number of hybrids it sells in Europe, but is holding back from adding them while diesel reigns supreme throughout the continent.

“We have new hybrids coming through and would love to launch them in Europe, but Europe prefers diesels. It is not as keen on hybrids,” says Toshihiro Mibe, the managing director of the development division and father of Honda’s current Earth Dreams engine programme. “We have completed our development and are discussing the possibilities.”

Honda currently offers a hybrid version of the Jazz in the UK, while the two-seater CR-Z is available only with an electrified powertrain. Both use a single-motor drive system which assists the internal combustion engine but does not drive the car unaided. However, Honda’s major sellers – the Civic hatch and CR-V crossover – are exclusively petrol- or diesel-powered.

But Honda is working on or has completed several alternative hybrid powertrains which can take over a greater share of the driving duties to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

There is a single-motor Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD) system, available in the Japanese-market Fit (the 2015 Jazz for the UK), which is said to be 30 per cent more efficient than the hybrid powertrain known to British buyers.

It pairs a 1.5-litre direct-injection engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with built-in high-output motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. It has yet to be decided whether this will come to the UK.

For mid-sized cars, starting with the Japanese and US Accord hybrid and plug-in hybrid, Honda has a two-motor Intelligent Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD) arrangement. Here, the petrol engine is linked to an electric continuously variable (CVT) transmission and two electric motors with a lock-up clutch so it can operate in three driving modes.

Finally there is the triple-motor Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system running in the Acura RLX saloon and currently being adapted for the NSX supercar.

In the front-engined RLX, one motor is combined with the 3.5-litre V6 engine while the others are fitted to the rear wheels. As a result the car has a four-wheel-drive system which can vary the amount of torque sent to either side at the rear.

Because the NSX will have a mid-mounted engine, the single motor will be located towards the rear with the two wheel motors at the front. The NSX will come to the UK, but the chances of SH-AWD being offered on anything else in Europe are slim to zero.

GALLERY: Honda Jazz Hybrid at new Yorii plant

Here’s a gallery of the new Honda Jazz Hybrid (Fit Hybrid in Japan), brought to you during a visit to the company’s new Yorii plant at the Saitama factory. The vehicle is the first to be equipped with Honda’s new Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD) one-motor hybrid system.

At the heart of things are a 110 PS/134 Nm 1.5 litre i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle engine, a 29.5 PS/160 Nm electric motor built into a seven-speed twin-clutch ‘box, and a lithium-ion battery. Unlike the previous IMA-equipped car, this one can go full electric – it automatically switches between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive depending on driving conditions. Off-the-line starts are done in EV mode.

A new electric servo braking system increases regeneration efficiency to the lithium-ion battery, while a fully-electric compressor reduces engine load. These contribute towards a significant 35% improvement in fuel efficiency to 36.4 km per litre – the highest of any vehicle available in Japan excluding plug-in hybrids.

Launched in Japan in September, the third-gen Honda Jazz also debuts the company’s ‘Solid Wing Face’ – the design identity that will be applied in stages to other Honda models around the world. It retains its clever interior packaging and centre fuel tank layout, and the audio and climate controls have been replaced by a touch-screen panel and a touch-pad respectively.

The latest news from Honda is the announcement of a new VTEC TURBO engine line-up comprising a 1.0 litre three-cylinder, a 1.5 litre four-cylinder and a 2.0 litre four-cylinder, all with direct injection and forced induction. The 2.0 litre will give the upcoming Honda Civic Type R hatch 280 horses to play with!
