    WTCC - Tarquini and Monteiro at Honda presentation

    Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro attended the official presentation of Honda Motorsports’ programme for the 2013 season.

    The main emphasis during the press conference was placed on the two major international programmes: the World Motorcycling Championship and the World Touring Car Championship.


    During the ceremony, Tarquini and Monteiro were called on the stage, where they posed for pictures together with their Honda Civic WTCC racing car and alongside the motorcycling Repsol Honda Team’s riders Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez.

    Tiago Monteiro covers over 1200km in the Honda Civic
    The Portuguese driver covering more than 1200km in just three days.




    Tiago Monteiro was behind the wheel of the Honda Civic for three days of intensive work on the Aragon circuit in Spain this week, the Portuguese driver covering more than 1200km with his new 2013 challenger.

    The three days were a complete and productive test ahead of the upcoming 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship season.

    Together with his teammate Gabriele Tarquini and JAS Honda Motorsports, Monteiro took to the track to review the latest evolution of the Honda Civic before the opening round of the FIA WTCC in March.

    Tiago Monteiro was satisfied with the quantity and quality of work done by the team and underlines: "We've done a lot of miles and didn't encounter any sort of problem.

    This is very positive. We worked closely together on every aspect of the car and the gearbox, new shocks, electronics etc ... We completed a few qualifying and racing simulations, it was a very comprehensive test."

    In addition to working on track, the team spent time analyzing the data and this meticulous and critical job definitely bore fruit. "We have made a step forward and I am very pleased with the progress," says Tiago Monteiro.

    "To date, this has been the most productive test. We are on the right track, but we have no way of comparing it with our competitors because we were the only ones on track in Aragon. But the figures and references we have indicate that we are more competitive."

    Tiago Monteiro will participate in another test session at the end of the month at the Monza racetrack, which will host the first round of the 2013 FIA WTCC on the 23rd and 24th of March.

      Honda's Brand New Touring Car Racer Is This Kickass Civic

      Honda is testing the brand new Civic WTCC for the '13 season. After completing the last three races of the 2012 championship, a two car works team will try to beat the competition with 2009 World Touring Car Champion Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro behind the wheel.

      The Mugen tuned 1.6 liter 4 cylinder direct injection turbo got updated for the challenge, which includes improvements to the turbocharger’s turbine revolution, the turbo-boost control and the pick-up of the engine rev. The intake port was also reshaped for optimizing the intake manifold length as well as modifying the ignition system. Apart from the engine refinement, the 2013 Civic also gets better aerodynamics and an enhanced suspension design, as well as a new front structure. As for the brakes, AP Racing made some bespoke front and rear calipers to help the newbie's championship dreams.

      But this time, I actually don't care that much about the specifications. What I'm interested in is what last season's Independent WTCC Champion and fellow Hungarian Norbert Michelisz can do with it after his success with BMW. His team, Zengő Motorsport got the third factory-backed Civic, giving Michelisz the chance to score even higher this year. He just has to be careful with those pigeons...

          Honda unveils Castrol as its title WTCC sponsor

          Honda has today announced that Castrol, the world famous high-performance lubricant brand, will be the title sponsor of its factory team in the 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship. The sponsorship deal, unveiled at the FIA’s WTCC media presentation in Turin, Italy this morning, heralds a new team name - Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team – as well as an exciting green, white and red livery for the Civic WTCC.

          At the same presentation Honda also announced that international automotive supplier, the Brose Group, will join Castrol as co-sponsors.



          The new team’s stylish 2013 livery aims to accentuate the lines of the new Civic, as well as reflect the corporate colours of Castrol – red and green on white. As a symbol of the strong spirit of the Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team, the colour scheme also incorporates Honda's own colours, as well as colours from the Italian and Portuguese flags to represent the nationality of J.A.S. Motorsport and drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro.

          Alessandro Mariani, Team Principal of the Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team, said: "We are delighted to have Castrol join us as our team’s title sponsor.           Team driver and 2009 WTCC champion Gabriele Tarquini said: "The livery on the Civic looks absolutely fantastic and I’m sure it will wow the fans this season. I know a lot of thought and time has gone into its design and it’s the colours of the Italian flag too, so I couldn’t be more pleased!”



          Tiago Monteiro echoed his team mate’s thoughts: “Castrol is such an iconic brand and sponsor in the world of motorsport, so I feel very honoured to be flying their colours this season. I’m equally pleased that Brose, who has been a long term supporter of my career, is joining the team as co-sponsors. Like Gabriele, I will be looking to repay their support with results."



          The 2012 Civic WTCC exceeded expectations by achieving its first podium finish after only two races. However, to further improve the car’s competitiveness, Honda R&D and J.A.S. Motorsport have put the car through a winter development testing programme in Valencia, Aragon, Cremona and Monza.



          The new car has been developed with the aim of enhancing drivability, with sharp engine pick-up and more linear cornering control ability. The resulting 2013 Civic WTCC is the culmination of all the experiences and data collected during this testing programme as well as the three races in 2012.



          The Championship will begin with the Race of Italy at Monza on 24 March 2013, finally ending in Macau on 17 November 2013 after 24 races.

                TARQUINI GIVES HONDA FIRST WTCC POLE

                Gabriele Tarquini returned on pole position thirteen months after Monza 2012. And this was a special one, as it marked the first pole for Honda in WTCC.

                After the qualifying session at Monza two weeks ago had showed that the Chevrolet cars were the fastest on the long straights, a fight among the five drivers in the Cruze was expected. Instead, the Italian ace put in two perfect laps, one in Q1 and one in Q2 to annihilate them all.
                Eventually James Nash emerged as the best of the Chevy men, qualifying in second, only 0.048 seconds behind Tarquini.
                It was a sweet and sour day for the Castrol Honda Racing, as Tiago Monteiro was eliminated in Q1, hitting a wall while he was comfortably among the top-twelve.
                Tom Coronel and James Thompson, who had managed to win a trip to Q2, could not take part after being involved in two different incidents just before the end of Q1.

                Qualifying 1:

                Gabriele Tarquini posted the fastest lap immediately before the red flag stopped the session. His time of 1:44.910 was good enough to keep him on top until the end of Q1. Yvan Muller (1:45.185) and Alex MacDowall (1:45.446) were classified second and third.
                The session was disrupted once by the red flag, after 15 minutes, when Tiago Monteiro’s Honda hit the wall at the exit of the second chicane.
                Local driver Mehdi Bennani fought hard to make the top-twelve, as he was lying in 13th position. Eventually he spoiled his chances, spinning at Turn 4 and hitting the barrier when the session resumed after the red flag. He pitted for repairs and rejoined with four minutes left on the clock, but could not improve.
                The late moments were full of drama for ROAL Motorsport. Tom Coronel managed to climb to tenth, kicking his team-mate Darryl O’Young out of the top-twelve. Moments later the Dutchman missed the braking point at Turn 10 and crashed into O’Young’s car. James Thompson, who had qualified ninth, hit the wall at the hairpin before the end of the session.
                The following drivers went through to Q2: Tarquini, Muller, MacDowall, Chilton, Oriola, Nykjær, Nash, Basseng, Thompson, Coronel, Huff, Monje.

                Qualifying 2:

                With Thompson and Coronel sidelined for the consequences of their incidents during Q1, Tarquini settled the matter on his first timed lap. His 1:44.358 was good enough to give Honda its first pole in WTCC.
                James Nash emerged as the fastest in the Yokohama Trophy and secured the second place overall with a lap of 1:44.406, beating Yvan Muller’s 1:44.504. Michel Nykjær (1:44.745), Tom Chilton (1:44.863) and Alex MacDowall (1:45.060) completed a Chevrolet quintet behind Tarquini’s Honda.
                Four SEAT cars rounded out the top-ten, with Rob Huff in seventh, followed by Marc Basseng, Pepe Oriola and Fernando Monje. The latter will be on pole position on the reversed grid for Race 2.

                  RACE 1 – NYKJÆR WINS A DRAMATIC RACE

                  Michel Nykjær and Nika Racing claimed their first WTCC victory at the end of a race full of drama in which the Dane stole the lead from Gabriele Tarquini fractions of second before the safety car was deployed.

                  Tarquini and his Honda had led from the start, resisting the pressure from Nykjær and James Nash. However the Italian driver opened a gap at the end of lap 5 and Nykjær did not think twice and took the inside line at the hairpin.
                  Seconds later the safety car was deployed and froze the race following Tiago Monteiro’s crash at Turn 3.
                  The race resumed with only two laps to go. And those were plenty of action with James Nash, Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alex MacDowall having a close battle for third position.
                  Nash managed to stay in third, while Muller beat Huff on the finish line by 0.024 seconds.

                  Pepe Oriola who will turn 19 in three months became the youngest ever winner of a WTCC race putting in a masterpiece performance and inflicting the first defeat to the Chevrolet cars since Suzuka last year.

                  The young Spaniard took the maximum out of his front row position on the reverse grid and led the race for the whole distance resisting a huge pressure from the RML duo of Yvan Muller and
                  Tom Chilton. Oriola did not crack under pressure even when the race resumed after a safety car period for a last frantic lap, and did not offer Muller the lesser opportunity to try an overtaking manouevre.
                  James Nash finished fourth and winner of the Yokohama Trophy, while Gabriele Tarquini and Rob Huff threw away possible good results in two different incidents.

                    THE WORD TO THE WINNERS

                    Quotes from Gabriele Tarquini and Tom Coronel who share victories at the Slovakia Ring.

                    Gabriele Tarquini – winner Race 1: “It was really emotional at the end of the first race. I regard this car like a baby; I am its father and Tiago looked after it for some races but now it has come back to me. It’s very important to me; sorry to the other two Honda drivers, but I really think of myself as the father of the Civic! The car is fantastic to drive; the tyre wear, braking and engine are all good. Acceleration and power aren’t quite as good as the Chevrolet but we knew that in a normal track we would be a lot more competitive than in the first two circuits. This was the first track where we have tested in the past and we knew it would be good. We improved a little in
                    every session – for example, we discovered that today, on a demanding track with high temperatures, our car was good right until the end. We have to go on from here with our Japanese and Italian team members working together to be even more competitive.”

                    Tom Coronel – winner Race 2: “The car felt really nice and you could see that I could play with it on the lap after the finish! We needed this; we were fighting hard last year and ROAL Motorsport is always fighting because the Italian style is that ‘second is first loser’! I saw in the first race that I had a good chance when I was behind Nash; the leading drivers were not pulling away and so I knew that I had to make a good start and I would be in with a chance. I had to keep Oriola behind me for the first few laps, but then I saw that his tyres were starting to go off and then I thought okay, here I go. Speed-wise we know we cannot compete with the Chevrolet and the Honda cars but the BMW is solid and consistent and it doesn’t break down. I know the car well now after the last two years and if we have circuits with lots of corners we know we can push the others hard. We know the fight for the title will be between the Chevrolet and the Honda, but if they make a mistake, ta-da I will be there!”

                    RACE 1 – FIRST VICTORY FOR HONDA CIVIC

                    Gabriele Tarquini gave the Castrol Honda team its first WTCC win when he converted pole position into victory in Race 1 at the Slovakia Ring.

                    In second place was Tarquini’s team-mate Tiago Monteiro, with Hungary’s Norbert Michelisz completing a Honda 1-2-3 by bringing his Zengö Motorsport Civic home in third place. James Nash finished as the leading Yokohama Trophy competitor, in sixth place overall in a bamboo-engineering Chevrolet Cruze.
                    The rolling start saw Tarquini, Monterio and Michelisz head into Turn 1 in the positions in which they had qualified and that’s the way it stayed, despite challenges from Michelisz on Monteiro and fourth-placed Yvan Muller on Michelisz. Tom Coronel spent much of the race pressuring Nash and the pressure paid off on Lap 8 when the BMW finally passed the Chevrolet. A thrilling four-way scrap for tenth position saw Mehdi Bennani pass Stefano D’Aste on Lap 9, with Fredy Barth then grabbing eleventh place from D’Aste as the cars crossed the finish line side by side.
                    Tom Chilton’s race lasted a little over a lap, with the Chevrolet Cruze taking to the gravel trap at Turn 6. Tom Boardman also failed to finish; the STR team was anxious to understand the cause of the engine problems that had dogged the SEAT all weekend and so told Boardman to come into the pits on Lap 7.

                    Key moments
                    Lap 1 – Tarquini first into Turn 1. Contact between Chilton and Barth at Turn 3.
                    Lap 2 – Chilton into the gravel at T6.
                    Lap 3 – Huff passed Thompson for 13th. Munnich through the gravel at T10.
                    Lap 4 – Huff ran wide and through the gravel at T1. Kozlovskiy went through the gravel at the same place and into the pits at the end of the lap.
                    Lap 7 – Boardman into the pits and stopped.
                    Lap 8 – Coronel passed Nash for 5th. Monteiro sideways in T9 but recovered
                    Lap 9 – Bennani passed D’Aste for 10th. Thompson passed Barth for 12th but Barth then re-took the place.
                    Lap 10 – Tarquini took the win. Barth snatched 11th from D’Aste on the line.

                    TARQUINI LEADS HONDA 1-2-3 IN QUALIFYING

                    Gabriele Tarquini will start from pole position in the first of tomorrow’s two FIA WTCC races at the Slovakia Ring.

                    Alongside him on the grid will be his Castrol Honda team-mate Tiago Monteiro after the pair dominated both parts of the two-stage Qualifying session.
                    Making it an all-Honda top three will be Norbert Michelisz, who qualified just twelve-hundredths of a second slower than Monteiro.
                    The leading Yokohama Trophy competitor will be Alex MacDowall, whose bamboo-engineering Chevrolet Cruze qualified sixth.
                    Thanks to the reversed grid, it will be the BMW 320 TC of Tom Coronel that will start Race 2 from pole position.

                    Qualifying 1
                    The session got off to a dramatic start when the BMW of Darryl O’Young made heavy contact with the barrier on the outside of Turn 9 after only around five minutes. The incident brought out the red flags and, after a pause of around half an hour, the session resumed with O’Young having been taken to the circuit medical centre for a precautionary check-up.
                    Tarquini and Monteiro were soon lying first and second, with the two RML Chevrolet Cruze cars of Yvan Muller and Tom Chilton third and fifth and the driver who was on pole position for the first WTCC race here last year, Norbert Michelisz, sandwiched between the pair in fourth.
                    The following drivers went through to Q2: Tarquini, Monteiro, Muller, Michelisz, Chilton, MacDowall, Huff, Nykjær, Oriola, Nash, Coronel and Bennani.

                    Qualifying 2
                    Tarquini’s pole-winning time (2:10.773) occurred on his first flying lap, with Monteiro (2:10.877) also setting his best time on the same lap. Michelisz (2:10.889) was third quickest in the Zengö Motorsport Honda Civic with Muller’s Chevrolet (2:10.941) the best non-Honda. Chilton (2:11.162) rounded off the top five, with Alex MacDowall (2:11.422), Rob Huff (2:11.624), James Nash (2:11.714), Pepe Oriola (2:11.882) and Tom Coronel (2:12.048) completing the top ten. Mehdi Bennani (2:12.857) was eleventh fastest and Michel Nykjaer (2:17.614) twelfth.

                    The second visit by the WTCC to the Slovakia Ring again attracted a huge crowd, as 38,000 spectators flocked to track over the two days.

                    They were treated to two close races, and if the first one was a fast procession led by the Honda trio, the second one provided plenty of action and overtaking.
                    Gabriele Tarquini became the first driver to win a WTCC race for three different manufacturers when his Honda Civic won the first of today’s two races at the Slovakia Ring. His win – also the first for the Castrol Honda WTCC team, and the second for the Japanese manufacturer since
                    James Thompson won with an Accord at Imola in 2008 – follows his victories for Alfa Romeo and SEAT and formed part of an all-Honda podium; his teammate Tiago Monteiro finished second and Norbert Michelisz was third in a Zengö Motorsport Civic.
                    Race 2 then saw victory go to the BMW 320 TC of Tom Coronel, who became the fifth driver to win a round of this year’s WTCC. Six of the seven BMW cars competing at the Slovakia Ring were fitted with new carbon fibre doors to reduce weight and it seemed Coronel took full advantage of the change. For a while, it looked as though there would be four different manufacturers represented on today’s two race podiums, but a slight error by the reigning WTCC Champion, Rob Huff, saw his SEAT León run wide on the penultimate lap, allowing the Chevrolet Cruze of Yvan Muller to finish second with Tarquini’s Honda third.
                    In the Yokohama Trophy there was a win apiece for the two bamboo-engineering drivers. James Nash took maximum points in Race 1 by finishing sixth overall while Alex MacDowall claimed the category win in Race 2 when he finished eighth.
                    The championship will resume next weekend at Budapest’s Hungaroring for rounds 7 and 8.
