Honda plans 3-4 diesel models in 2-3 years

Honda Cars India plans to roll out 3-4 diesel models in the country over the next 2-3 years, Hironori Kanayama (pictured), itspresident and CEO, said on Thursday.

To start with, the company will launch an entry-level sedan based on the Brio platform next fiscal.

It is also studying options in new segments like utility vehicles and compact sports utility vehicles, where it does not have a presence at present.

To be sure, Honda has been missing a large part of the action because it only has petrol vehicles in a market where demand for diesel vehicles has rocketed in recent years because of the price difference between the two fuels.

The new range of products could help it catch up with competition.
Honda said it has started work on manufacturing diesel engines in India at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, though it did not share details on capacity and investment.

“We cannot tell you the exact product plan, but we are very very ambitious,” said Kanayama. “We are still working on the sequence of which model and the timing of the launch for the same.”

Honda could consider getting products from its existing global line-up or develop an India-specific product like Brio.
The company said it will introduce the diesel option in the next generation of new models and the next generation of the existing models.
Honda Siel Cars sold 54,427 units in 2011-12, down 8.46% compared with the previous fiscal.
“The future models in diesel will bring us to the right position,” said Kanayama.
Meanwhile, the company is also ramping up exports from India. As against a total of 1,028 units exported in the last 14 years, it plansto ship 1,600 units of its small car Brio by the end of this year to South Africa and other Asian countries.

Honda May Share Platforms, Facilities With Malaysia’s Proton

Honda Motor Co. (7267), Japan’s third- largest automaker, may share car platforms and production facilities with Malaysian national carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd.

The companies signed an agreement yesterday and will also explore opportunities to collaborate in technology and new product line-up, according to a Kuala Lumpur stock exchange filing by Proton’s parent, DRB-Hicom Bhd. (DRB)

“Having a strong and renowned global automotive player like Honda Motor as the foreign strategic partner to Proton will provide the group with the opportunity to grow as an original equipment manufacturer,” DRB said in the statement. “The opportunities are endless.”

Honda already produces cars in Malaysia, including CR-V sports utility vehicles. For Proton, the deal may provide access to technology that could help it boost exports, after holding unsuccessful alliance talks with Volkswagen AG and Peugeot SA.

DRB, an autos-to-property group controlled by billionaire Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, wants to bolster Proton after taking over the Malaysian carmaker this year.

DRB’s shares jumped as much as 5.3 percent to 2.60 ringgit in Kuala Lumpur trading yesterday, the highest intraday level since Aug. 24, after Business Times reported Proton may sign a strategic partnership with an unnamed Japanese carmaker. The stock later pared gains to close at 2.53 ringgit before the announcement, having risen 24 percent this year. The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index is up 9.3 percent this year.

The agreement “indicates DRB’s commitment and initiative in restructuring Proton and turning it around with strategic partnership,” Daniel Wong, an analyst at Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd., wrote in a report yesterday, ahead of the statement. “We strongly believe that DRB is taking swift actions in integrating newly acquired Proton and contributing positively to the group.”

Proton, set up by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1983 to steer the Southeast Asian nation’s industrialization plan, owns unprofitable British sports-car maker Lotus Group International Ltd. and has been struggling to compete with rivals including Toyota Motor Corp.

Honda to move Mexico manufacturing operation to Florence County facility

TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. - (WBTW) - At a press conference to celebrate the making of its 2.5 millionth ATV, Honda of SC announced it would expand operations Thursday.

Honda announced it would move operations from Mexico to Timmonsville.

The company will make a $27 million investment to prepare for additional side by side production at the Florence County facility.

Honda said the move will create approximately 65 new jobs initially.

“The Timmonsville plant has established a strong foundation in South Carolina by continually improving our plant operations in order to exceed the expectations of our customers,” said Brian Newman, president of Honda South Carolina. “The addition of this new product will allow the Timmonsville plant to deepen its commitment to the state of South Carolina by investing in new expansion, tooling and new jobs for this area. Production of the side-by-side also will benefit the region by increasing the volume and range of parts purchasing from domestic suppliers.”

“We congratulate Honda of South Carolina in reaching a milestone with the production of the 2.5 millionth ATV at the Florence facility. We are also excited that Honda has chosen to invest $27 million and create more than 65 new jobs in Timmonsville. When a world-class company like Honda increases its footprint here, it shows that South Carolina is the right place to do business,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.

Honda Promises Next-Generation Fit Will Bring Four-fold Sales Increase

Honda wants to two million cars in the U.S. in 2016, but it’s not looking only to the blockbuster Civic or Accord models to puff up the sales sheets. Instead, Honda President Takanobu Ito is hoping that a new generation of Honda Fit hatchback–made in the company’s new Mexican plant–can make up the difference.

The Fit’s had a decently good ride over the past six years: it sold 27,934 units during its first year of American sales (2006), but that number ballooned to 79,794 in 2008 as gas prices jumped and customers looked to downsize their rides without sacrificing interior space. The second-generation model went on sale in Fall 2008 and enjoyed good sales in 2009–67,315 units–but have leveled to between 50 and 60,000 units ever since. 2011 is shaping up to be the Fit’s worst year since 2007, with good reason: not only does the Fit’s fuel economy leave it behind competitors (and even the Civic), Honda is limiting exports of the money-losing Fit thanks to a poor exchange rate between the Yen and Dollar.

So how will the Fit make its resurgence? Two ways: for one, President Ito promises that Honda’s new Mexican plant–which will make up to 200,000 units a year and go online in 2014–will make both the Fit and as-yet-unknown Fit variants, and send the “vast majority” of them to the U.S. market – which should make Fit pricing more competitive while retaining profit margins for dealers and Honda alike. Honda also promises that the new Fit will deliver better fuel economy and better packaging. Considering the current Fit boasts both the so-called Magic Seat and surprising rear-seat headroom, that’s quite a promise.

Those forthcoming Fit variants are the second leg of the plan: while a new Fit with class-competitive pricing and better fuel economy would do well in the compact market (surely outselling the 50,000-or-so units Honda will sell here this year), Honda hopes to use the Fit platform to produce a slew of variants in hopes of catching buyers’ eyes. The next Fit Hybrid–which will be the first vehicle to use the new generation of Honda Integrated Motor Assist–isn’t yet confirmed for the U.S. market, but we’ve long heard of some sort of Fit-based CUV potentially coming to the states, where it would slot beneath the CR-V.

Can Honda quadruple Fit sales in four years? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Kiyonari To Develop Honda Customer Bike In MotoGP?
Three-time British Superbike Ryuichi Kiyonari could return to MotoGP in 2013 to lead development of the proposed production racer version of Honda's RC213V.

HRC boss Shuhei Nakamoto disclosed earlier this year that Honda wants to create a bike between the spec of satellite and factory bikes to sell, not lease, to MotoGP teams starting in 2014 as an alternative to CRT machines. Nakamoto believes the production racers would improve the racing at a reasonable cost

The plan apparently has stalled at the highest levels of approval within the corporate halls of Honda, but Nakamoto-san never has declared it dead.

British media reported that HRC may choose Kiyonari to replace Michele Pirro as the rider next season of the CRT bike for Gresini, also using Kiyonari to test the production racer. Pirro is leaving Gresini after this season to become Ducati's official test rider.

"At the moment, the final decision hasn't been taken on whether we go ahead with the production RC213V project," HRC honcho Livio Suppo said. "If it did, then it is perhaps better to have a Japanese rider developing something like this for the communication with the engineers. Kiyonari is definitely an option."

Kiyonari last raced in MotoGP in 2003, stepping in for the rest of the season at Gresini after Daijiro Kato was killed at Suzuka.

              Construieste-ti propriul
              Honda Jazz facelift Configurator

Five Things We Learned About Honda’s Future Product Plans

After sampling prototype vehicles and touring Honda’s crash-testing facility, we had a chance to sit down with a group of American journalists and ask Honda Motor Co. President and CEO Takanobu Ito about his company’s future product plans. Here are five key things we learned.

                1. Honda wants more sporty cars… eventually

“I want!” Ito exclaimed in a rare burst of English when a reporter asks whether Honda will build more sports cars in the vein of the old Integra, Prelude, and S2000. Sadly, that’s as close as we got to a confirmation that Honda will keep building fun cars. Ito said he knew that Honda should make attractive, appealing, and interesting cars, but wouldn’t speak to the actual possibility of more sports cars. But he said direct-injection and turbocharged engines would help with those goals. Honda has already committed to making the next-generation Civic Type R the fastest front-wheel-drive car to ever lap the Nürburgring.

Asked about the possibility of a new dedicated sports car like the S2000, Honda managing officer Toshihiko Nonaka said, “We don’t really have a concrete plan yet.”

                2. Honda will use both dual-clutch and continuously variable transmissions

Honda has long used CVTs in fuel efficient vehicles and hybrids, and even in the new 2013 Honda Accord four-cylinder, yet the tech briefing showed several prototype hybrids with dual-clutch transmissions. So which transmission option will Honda use going forward? Both.

Honda maintains that CVTs are generally the better solution for all-out fuel economy, but recognizes that dual-clutch transmissions are much more fun to drive and sporty. Cars that are designed only with fuel economy in mind will continue to use CVTs, but premium and sportier vehicles will get dual-clutch setups.

“DCT is intended for sporty experience for vehicles,” Nonaka explained. “[It's] not just for hybrids, and can be combined with regular sportier gasoline engines.”

                3. The driver is still in charge

Despite the large number of active-safety systems on display here, Ito maintains that the driver is always in charge of Honda vehicles. He related the story of naming Honda’s electronic stability control system several years ago: while German supplier Bosch preferred the name end in “control,” Ito wanted to call it “Vehicle Stability Assist” to point out that the system helps, rather than takes over from, the driver. In much the same way, Ito says that active safety systems should protect against crashes without overriding the driver’s intentions and making driving boring.

“The driver should be responsible for having fun while driving, at the same time he should be responsible for safe driving,” Ito said. “We would like to respect the driver’s will as much as possible… At the same time, we would like to provide [technology] to provide the safest driving.”

                4. Downsized turbocharged engines are on the way

Honda has already confirmed that the next Civic Type R will use a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine based on that of the Civic WTCC race car. After that, Honda will begin offering more downsized turbocharged engines in future products. The move comes a fair bit after most other automakers switched from V-6 engines to turbo four-cylinders, due to the fact that Honda is only just starting to tinker with direct fuel injection.

“First of all, the main key is that we are successful in developing direct injection engines,” said Ito. “By adopting turbocharging systems, we get can have an engine with better fuel efficiency as well as better performance.

Nonaka says that Honda will show a downsized turbo gasoline engine at the next Honda Meeting — which will probably be in fall 2013.

                5. Honda wants to appeal to younger buyers

Automakers all around the world are struggling as young people eschew buying cars in favor of public transportation and buying fancy smartphones and tablet computers. Ito appeared troubled by this trend and says he believes that this is partly because there are no exciting cars that appeal to young people.

“For young people to buy cars, they need to find automobiles in general interesting,” Ito said. “Maybe the car manufacturers, including ourselves, may be a little complacent in our efforts to build real fun and excitement, and making cars interesting and attractive to young people.”

He also said that many young people simply can’t afford new cars — not only because of the purchase price, but also because the cost of car ownership (mainly fuel costs) keep increasing. Ito thinks that improving Honda vehicle fuel economy will help make the company’s new cars more accessible to younger customers.

                  Honda's smaller, next-generation Insight hybrid

Looking to finally crack the secret to rivaling Toyota's Prius line, Honda is moving its next-generation Insight hybrid down market. Whereas the current Insight targets the standard Prius, the next-generation of the car will take aim at the smaller Prius c.

Don't let this test mule's looks fool you – what we have here is an early testbed for the next-generation Insight, not a new version of the Honda Fit.

Underneath the Fit's bodywork resides all-new mechanicals that will form the basis of the all-new Insight. Although our spy photographers weren't able to snap a picture of the mule's engine bay, Honda's latest 1.5L four-cylinder and new seven-speed gearbox likely reside underhood.

Honda hasn't found much success going against the standard Prius, so will instead focus on the compact Prius c for the car's next-generation. In fact, this Insight mule was spotted testing alongside Toyota's smallest Prius model.

A peak inside reveals significant modifications to the Fit's center stack and gauge cluster. A new gear lever is clearly visible, mimicking the design found in Toyota's Prius.

Given the Insight's disappointing sales, Honda is likely rushing this new model to market. That means we could see Honda's new Insight for the 2014 model year, rather than a 2015 launch that was previously rumored.

Tested: New Honda tech adds sportiness while reducing consumption

Honda is planning a three-prong transmission strategy for its upcoming hybrid vehicles, a move that underscores the difficulties it has encountered attempting to cater to both its enthusiast base and a burgeoning market for high-mpg vehicles.

Honda's hybrid line will go in three directions – a one-motor variant hooked up to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (named i-DCD) for smaller cars ( Fit hybrid-size vehicle), a two-motor system with a CVT for mainstream high-mpg models (Accord Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid) and a three-motor system mated to all-wheel-drive and the i-DCD for the company's high-end models ( Acura RLX and NSX). Notably, Honda is now branding all of its gasoline-electricity models as “Sport Hybrids,” a marketing move presumably designed to connect with drivers put off by the detached experience most hybrids offer.

Leftlane was on hand at Honda's research and development center outside of Tokyo to briefly sample all three powertrains – plus the automaker's upcoming rear-wheel steering system - in test mule vehicles, two of which will hit the North American market in 2013.

                    Four cylinders, two transmissions

Mated to a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine, the one motor hybrid system is a unique rethink of Honda's small car strategy. Instead of the CVTs that typically transmit power to the wheels, the automaker's new seven-speed i-DCD is designed to provide a more engaging – and familiar – driving experience.

Our tests were limited to a current generation Japanese market Honda Fit test mule (Honda won't say just where the new powertrain will first arrive, but the next-generation Fit and Civic seem likely). We found engagement of the transmission to be particularly smooth, although shifts are not as rapid-fire as the DSG unit fitted to the new Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid. Compared to balky dual clutch units used by some rivals in non-hybrid compacts – think Ford Focus and Dodge Dart – the Honda unit provided nearly conventional automatic-style shifting. The dual clutch can deliver EV-only driving at startup and during low to medium speed cruising thanks to a clutch that disengages the gas engine entirely.

But the advantages, Honda says, are in its fuel economy and its ability to increase energy regeneration during deceleration. Making the most of the 1.5-liter's power band, the dual clutch increases fuel economy by about 30 percent over a CVT.

However, CVTs aren't entirely a thing of the past, Honda says. The company's new two-motor system will arrive early next year in the North American-market Accord Hybrid and Accord Plug-In Hybrid. Here, the CVT couples with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a pair of built-in electric motors and a lock-up clutch for three driving modes – EV, gas engine and traditional hybrid.

Aside from a slight gruffness as the engine approaches higher revs, the CVT is generally well behaved in its operation. Acceleration feels linear and free of the “elastic band” effect that used to afflict CVTs.

                    Previewing Acura's new RLX

Our favorite vehicles to sample were a pair of last-generation Honda Accords that hid the 2014 Acura RLX's upcoming all-wheel-drive powertrain and front-wheel-drive suspension with rear wheel steering.

Hidden behind the old Accord body, the Super Handling all-wheel-drive (or SH-AWD) model's three-motor hybrid was mated to a 3.5-liter V6, the seven-speed dual clutch (with its own electric drive motor) and a pair of electric motors at the rear to individually apportion torque between the right and left rear wheels. Despite its name, the system has little in common with the SH-AWD of the current, slow-selling Acura RL.

Despite the old body (and good looking 19-inch wheels), the Accord test mule we drove was positively 21st century. The seven-speed dual clutch transmission was set only to a sport setting (a normal mode will be the default), which gave it firm shifts and rev blimps on downshifting. We didn't get to sample the car in normal mode.

Pushed hard into a corner on Honda's ultra-smooth test track, the mule was confident and stable. Torque transition between the rear wheels was essentially unnoticeable, but a heads-up display projects an image of how much power is headed to each of the four wheels. Though the screen could prove a little distracting in production models, it was useful during our evaluation.

Honda promises four-cylinder fuel economy and V8-level power delivery. We'll have to wait for the EPA figures for the former, but the lithium-ion battery pack and electric motor do provide credibility to the eight-cylinder performance comparison.

Next up was the Accord mule with the world's first independent rear-steer system, which will be fitted only to the front-wheel-drive base model version of the RLX. Capable of adjusting the rear wheels' toe – the angle at which they “steer” - the system has several advantages: It aids high speed cornering and lane changes, it decreases low speed turning radii and, notably, it increases stability during braking.

We found all three of Honda's claims to be true, especially at low velocities, where the Accord mule felt uncannily nimble. At first, the rear end felt a bit “loose” while navigating a tight corner, but we soon adapted to the system. During braking, the mule was arrow-straight and predictable.

With their rear torque-transitioning motors, all-wheel-drive RLXs realize most of the Precision All Wheel Steer system's advantages on their own, so the system is front drive-exclusive, but we think a version of the system will make great sense if it is eventually brought down to Honda's most mainstream model, the Accord.

                    What's it all mean?

Though we'll have to wait for a full evaluation of the new technologies in production models, Honda's decision to simultaneously focus and expand its hybrid lineup strikes us as a valuable strategy.

We're particularly excited about the seven-speed dual clutch unit, which Honda will also use on its gas-only models. Perhaps the hybrid future is bright after all.

Honda developing flagship sedans in U.S.: report

TOKYO (Nikkei) -- Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO, HMC) is shifting development of its next-generation Civic and Accord models to the U.S. to speed up the release of vehicles suited to local tastes, the Nikkei reports in its Nov. 26 edition.

U.S. subsidiary Honda R&D Americas Inc. is overseeing the next Civic model due to hit the market around 2016 at a facility in Ohio, the Nikkei said. U.S. engineers will design the body and interior and select parts. They are also entrusted with setting up mass-production facilities.

The U.S. unit will soon start development of the next-generation Accord as well.

Civics and Accords account for one-third of Honda's global sales, or around 500,000 to 600,000 units apiece annually. Around half of the vehicles are sold in North America, a market that generates 40% of the auto maker's consolidated operating profit.

Subsidiary Honda R&D Co.'s facilities in Tochigi Prefecture have traditionally handled development, with roughly 9,000 specialists assigned to design new vehicles bound for global markets.

With the domestic market trending toward smaller cars, however, Honda's best-selling vehicles in Japan are now the Fit subcompact and minicars, while annual Civic and Accord sales have diminished to several thousand units.

It therefore makes less sense to develop those vehicles in Japan. Honda employs roughly 2,000 engineers in North America, including 200 or so dispatched from Japan. With these specialists having gained expertise in vehicles sold in the North American market, Honda believes the time is right to have them oversee development of the sedans.

Honda spends roughly 500 billion yen a year on R&D. From now on, development of vehicles bound for overseas markets will be scaled back at the domestic research base, which will focus on next-generation technology such as a fuel-cell-powered vehicle due out as early as 2015.

                        2014 Honda MDX Return

The well known Honda MDX is all set to return to Australia within 2 years. It should be noted that the third generation of the premium large SUV will soon be revealed, possibly at the LA auto show.

“We’d love to have the MDX back,” said Honda Australia’s principal adviser, Lindsay Smalley. “We need to plug our model line. We need to plug that (premium-large SUV) line, and plug the sub-compact SUV segment.”

Way back then, the X5/ML-sized MDX was launched from $69,990, and it was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, and in its first full year on-sale, the MDX scored just 677 sales, compared with 3138 units of the BMW X5 and 1226 of the Mercedes-Benz ML. All this happened despite the Honda Accord Euro lining up as a ‘non premium’ Mazda6 competitor in Australia, The Euro just like the MDX sells in North America as an Acura, Honda’s Lexus-rivalling premium brand. And the current generation Honda MDX which was launched in 2006, is powered by a 224kW/370Nm 3.7-litre V6 linked to a six-speed automatic. And as per the Speculation it is believed that the two-tonne seven-seater will be available with a petrol-electric drivetrain, which would also provide Honda with a rival for the Lexus RX450h.

Honda to be "net exporter" by 2014

Honda says it will be a "net exporter" of vehicles from North America within two years. The Japanese automaker made the announcement at a ceremony to mark the company's 1 millionth U.S.-built vehicle for export.

Honda, the first Japanese automaker to setup shop in United States, says it will export more vehicles from North American than it imports from Japan by 2014. Honda began exporting vehicles from the U.S. in 1987.

"Quality for the world, made in America, has been an important Honda commitment for the past 25 years," said Takanobu Ito, president & CEO of Honda. "In the coming years, we will take on the challenge of helping even more customers around the world enjoy Honda products made in the USA."

The announcement coincided with the production of Honda's 1 millionth U.S.-built vehicle for export. The milestone-setting vehicle was a 2013 Honda Accord destined for the South Korean market.

Honda, which exports vehicles to more than 40 countries, is on pace to ship about 100,000 Honda and Acura-badged vehicles from the U.S. In 2012.

Honda Fit getting 3 new variants, including sedan

The Honda Fit might be a small car, but it is going to play a big role in Honda's goal of increasing sales by 18 percent by the end of the 2017 fiscal year. In this time, production of the subcompact will commence in Mexico, and sales of the car are expected to swell to 200,000 units annually thanks to an expanded model lineup.

Joining the current hatchback model, Honda is planning to use the Fit as the basis for a new sedan and crossover, although it isn't clear whether or not the cars will wear the Fit nameplate. According to Automotive News, various sources have confirmed that the new bodystyles will be made at the new Mexican plant, but Honda has not yet said if all three models will be on sale in the US. Adding a sedan would allow the Fit to better compete against rival cars like the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Sonic and Hyundai Accent, while the new crossover would give a unique product in the ever-growing B-segment.

The redesigned Honda Fit goes on sale next year with the new plant in Mexico going on line in 2014. The report says that the "vast majority" of cars built at this plant will be exported to the US.

Honda to Build Fit Hatch, Sedan and Crossover Models at New Mexican Plant

It’s no secret that Honda plans to introduce the new generation of the Fit (sold as the Jazz in Europe) sub-compact next year and by 2015, two more variants based on the same underpinnings, including a small sedan and a crossover model, which we believe to be based on the Urban SUV Concept that was announced earlier today in advance of its Detroit Motor Show debut.

Now a report from Automotive news says that all three variants of the Fit will be built at a brand new Honda facility currently under construction in Mexico.

The Honda insider, who was not named, told the publication that the Japanese brand is considering selling all three cars in the United States as the company foresees a general shift towards smaller automobiles.

The upcoming plant, which will be Honda's second factory in Mexico, is due to open up for business in 2014 with an annual capacity for 200,000 vehicles, of which up to 30 percent will be destined for local consumption, according to the same source.

Last year, Honda sold a little over 36,000 cars in Mexico, but in 2012, sales were up by more than 50 percent to just under 43,000 vehicles through October.
